ABSTRACT

The study aimed to test the effectiveness of the localized and interactive Iloco wordbook in word recognition and word comprehension of grade 1 pupils in selected schools in Quezon district. A quasi-experimental design was used while stratified random sampling was employed to identify the 68 respondents constituting the control and experimental group. Statistical tools such as independent sample t-test, ETA², and content analysis served as tools in the treatment of data. Results showed that the mean pre-test and post-test of the experimental group under vocabulary were interpreted as satisfactory and outstanding respectively while word comprehension was satisfactory and very satisfactory respectively. On the other hand, the control group under vocabulary and word comprehension was interpreted as both satisfactory to very satisfactory. It was also revealed that there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental group over the control group. It also indicated that there was a large effect of the Iloco wordbook on the vocabulary and word comprehension of the experimental group. Lastly, the respondents commented favorable learning experiences with the use of the Iloco wordbook which they found easy to understand and they were able to cope with their difficulty in word recognition and comprehension. Thus, it is recommended that a version of this from other learning areas should be crafted to resolve similar difficulties.
