Jean-Rose P. Montalban, Furao Elementary School

ABSTRACT

This study determines the effect of Project ROSA (Reading Comprehension Outputs and Skills development through Activities) in the reading comprehension skills of the Grade 6 pupils of Furao Elementary School. Criterion Sampling Method with experimental observations was used in this study to purposefully select pupils who struggled the most in reading comprehension. Participants were the 20 Grade 6 pupils of Furao Elementary School. The pupils improved their reading comprehension skills in oral and silent reading as manifested in the computed mean differences of 5.75 and 1.20. However, the calculated r-value of .307 signifies a low correlation between reading comprehension [silent] and academic performance simultaneously. On the other hand, there is a high degree of relationship between the reading comprehension [oral]and the academic performance of the pupils, as shown in the computed r-value of .804. Thus, there is a significant difference in the pupils’ reading comprehension exposed to the Project ROSA reading material from the results obtained. Furthermore, there is a positive correlation of the intervention material to the learners’ academic performances in English 6. From the given conclusions, there is a need for a follow-up study on the reading abilities of the pupils, a broader scope, and different reading materials also be implemented and use of the Project ROSA reading material to other grade levels and various learning areas.
