Electronic Strategic Intervention Material (E-SIM) in Teaching Transcription and Translation: Its Efficacy

Prince Donnierich C. Bugaoisan, Master Teacher I, Doña Aurora National High School

ABSTRACT

SIM (Strategic Intervention Material) has been proven effective in increasing students’ academic performance. An innovation has been integrated to the traditional SIM by improving interaction between the student and the SIM and adding more multimedia components, thus making the E-SIM (Electronic Intervention Material). This study tested the effect of E-SIM to students’ performance. This study was conducted at Doña Aurora National High School, Aurora, Isabela during the third quarter of the school year 2016-2017. It was limited to exploring the effect of Translation and Transcription E-SIM to students’ gain scores in a pre-test and post-test. It made use of two section of Grade 10 students adopting the experimental pre-test/posttest control group design. An Independent-samples t-test was conducted to compare students’ achievement in an intervention and no intervention conditions. The result of the study showed a significant difference in the students’ gain scores for intervention (M=14.30, SD=3.75) and no intervention (M=10.80, SD=3.54) conditions; t(58)=3.72, p = 0.000. The results suggest that when students use the E-SIM as an intervention, their achievement score increases. Furthermore, Cohen’s d effect size value (d = .96) suggested the intervention’s large effect to student’s achievement.
