Writer/GO Green CoordinatorGo Green Program plays a vital role in school. It is one of the programs being implemented nationwide with an objective to develop awareness about minimizing wastes, reusing materials like plastic bottle, and used tires for gardening and value vegetables, medicinal plants, fruit bearing trees and native plants. Though our school, is located at an urban area, it does not mean that planting is not possible. There are ways on how an individual can plant wherever and whatever kind of space he/she has. It does not only involve about planting but also cleaning around us. This program doesn't solely valuing medicinal and edible plants but also shows on how everyone should know how to care for the environment especially the school surroundings to make the place better to the eyes and minds of everyone especially to our young ones and motivate them to apply it at home and to the community they belong.
The first picture shows an activity that ensures cleanliness of the surroundings of the school. Officers and members of Eco-savers and SPG together with me as their guide, were united to make the activities successful. Hence, involving them in cleaning program has made them realize that they were not just in school to study but also to let themselves be part of helping the school to be safe from diseases caused by an untidy environment.
The second picture shows that being in an urban area should not hinder us to stop planting instead one must know how to be resourceful as what the photo indicates. I was able to let mustards grow through using a wheel.
The third picture shows a hydroponics way of planting. Water and coconut husked were used instead of soil. I demonstrated to my Eco-savers on how to do this kind of planting vegetables like pechay that is possible if there is a limited soil.
The above activities show that everyone can plant anything as if he/she has the willingness to do so. Also, safety of our youth inside the school is assured if the surroundings are clean and they are motivated to come in school if they feel their importance and involvement for the completion of a program like Go Green that fulfills the mission which is to be a child and eco-friendly school.
Stakeholders such as the teaching and non-teaching personnel, parents and students were engaged in the planned activities for the year and extended their hands as they could for its success.
Vegetables like pechay, malunggay, tomatoes, camote tops, bitter gourd, string beans, alugbati, eggplant and other plants were planted through the Eco-saver’s participation. They were the ones who involved themselves from the beginning until the harvest times.
The food menu of Feeding Program like sinigang and tinola used the harvested vegetables like malunggay, eggplant and string beans in the food preparation for feeding beneficiaries as a source of nutrients that could help in enhancing their mental and physical development.
Drills for safety and security were also done as a preparation and to develop awareness of the students for the unexpected circumstances. They were taught on what to do if an earthquake and fire happen.
Waste segregation, maintaining the cleanliness inside and outside the school and recycling some materials were also some of the activities done through the help of the stakeholders especially the different student organizations of the school.
One of the programs that the Department of Education-Philippines has implemented nationwide is what we called as "Go Green”. It plays a vital role in school. It is one of the programs of the government with an objective to develop awareness about minimizing wastes and value vegetables, medicinal plants, fruit bearing trees and native plants. Though many schools are located at an urban area, planting is still possible. There are ways on how an individual can plant wherever and whatever kind of space he/she has.
This program involves planting and cleaning as well. It is not solely focus on valuing medicinal and edible plants but also shows on how everyone should know how to care for the environment especially the school surroundings and make it better to the eyes of everyone especially to the young ones.
One of the objectives of this program is to ensure cleanliness of the school surroundings. Officers and members of Eco-savers and School Government Council in every school involve themselves in cleaning program that has made them realize that they are in school not just to study but also to let themselves be part of helping the place to be safe from diseases caused by an untidy environment.
Go Green Program shows that even if someone belongs to an urban area, it should not hinder her/him to stop planting instead one must know how to be resourceful like using plastic bottles in growing plants.
One of the ways to sustain this program is through hydroponics way of planting where water solution and coconut husked are being used instead of soil.
The above-mentioned activities show that everyone can plant everywhere if he/she has the willingness to do so. Also, safety of our youth inside the school is assured if the surroundings are clean and they are more motivated to come and study if they feel their importance and involvement for the completion of a program like Go Green. Such instances fulfill the mission which is to be a child and eco-friendly school.
