The School Head
Eric Mapa Nuñez’s professional journey in education began in 2006 and reflects nearly two decades of dedication, growth, and meaningful service. He started his career in the private sector under the Sisters of St. Francis (OSF), where he built a strong foundation in teaching and student formation. From 2006 to 2008, he served at St. Joseph Freinademetz School in Tacloban City. As a newly licensed teacher, he developed essential skills in classroom management and embraced a holistic, faith-centered approach to education. These early experiences shaped his teaching philosophy and deepened his commitment to nurturing young learners.
In 2008, he transferred to Sto. Niño Academy in Malitbog, Southern Leyte, where he served until 2013. During his five years there, he specialized in teaching early graders, particularly as a Grade 2 Adviser while also handling Grade 1 pupils. He became known for his patience and effectiveness in helping children develop foundational literacy and numeracy skills. His ability to guide young learners through their formative years strengthened his passion for reading instruction, which would later become a hallmark of his career.
On June 3, 2013, Mr. Nuñez entered public service by joining the Department of Education under the Southern Leyte Division. His first assignment was at Mapgap Multigrade Elementary School, where he faced the challenges of multigrade teaching. Managing multiple grade levels in a single classroom required creativity, adaptability, and strong organization. He embraced the responsibility, ensuring that every learner in the remote community received quality instruction. In 2015, he transferred to Camansi Elementary School in his birthplace, Barangay Camansi. During his two years there, he not only continued teaching in a multigrade setting but also strengthened community relationships and helped maintain high student enrollment.
A significant milestone in his career came in November 2017 when he transferred to Hubasan Elementary School. It was here that he developed Project EASIER (Encourage A Student Into Empowered Reader), a reading intervention program aimed at improving the literacy skills of Grade 6 learners. The program was officially recognized as a “Highly Effective” school-initiated innovation and was recommended for replication across the district. This achievement highlighted his initiative, creativity, and strong advocacy for literacy development.
In June 2023, Mr. Nuñez was entrusted with leading Baculod Elementary School as Teacher-In-Charge. Under his leadership, the school experienced rapid progress and improvement. His management skills, strategic planning, and ability to inspire teachers resulted in Baculod Elementary School being recognized as the “Most Improved School” in the division during the first quarter of School Year 2024–2025. On August 4, 2025, he was officially promoted to Head Teacher I. As School Head, he continues to lead the implementation of the MATATAG Curriculum while mentoring his faculty and strengthening school systems.
Beyond administrative leadership, Mr. Nuñez has made cultural and academic contributions to the school community. He composed the official school anthem, “Himno sa Baculod Elementary School,” which is now proudly sung during school ceremonies and programs, fostering unity and school pride. At the same time, he pursued higher education, completing 30 units in the Master of Arts in Education major in Educational Management at SLSU–Tomas Oppus. After passing the Comprehensive Examination, he earned his Certificate of Academic Requirements (CAR), demonstrating his commitment to lifelong learning.
Across 19 years of teaching and leadership, Eric Mapa Nuñez has evolved from a dedicated classroom teacher into a visionary school head. His career reflects a deep commitment to literacy, continuous improvement, and service to rural communities. Through innovation, leadership, and perseverance, he continues to make a lasting impact on the learners, teachers, and communities he serves.
