Unit 4

involves reading, analyzing, and exploring texts, and engaging in sustained argumentation about race in America. You’ll be asked to consider how thesearguments relate to our sense of who we are, both as individuals and as Americans. As in Unit 3, you will first read, analyze, and discuss a number of published pieces, using the Journal in conjunction with the other course tools to help you read accurately and analytically.

The second portion of the Reading and Writing Arguments about Race in America unit will be devoted to the writing workshop process, again using your reading and discussions concerning race, documented in your Journal, to help informyour paper’s argument. You’ll continue to give pointed feedback to your peers and will, in turn,receive and weigh feedback on your own writing.

Important vocabulary for this unit:

Poetry-

Figurative Language- words that may not literally mean what they say.
Simile- compare two unlike things using like or as “Her hand is as cold as ice.”
Metaphor- comparing two things that are not a like “You’re a Firework” (without using like or as).
Personification- speaking of something that is not human as if it had human abilities and human reactions.
Hyperbole-great exaggeration used to emphasize a point.
Alliteration- Repetition of a sound at the beginning of a word "Silly Sarah Sue Sang."
Allusion-is a figure of speech that refers to a well-known story, event, person, or object in order to make a comparison in the readers' minds.
Symbolism-A figure of speech where an object, person, or situation has another meaning other than its literal meaning.
Sensory Language/Imagery- words or phrases that help appeal to the reader’s five senses.
Line-s a unit of language into which a poem is divided.
Stanza- a group of lines that form a unit in a poem.
Speaker- the narrative voice in a poem.
Rhyme Scheme- a regular pattern of rhyming words in a poem (ab ab ab).
Meter- is a unit of rhythm in poetry, the pattern of the beats.
Mood- the feeling created in the story.
Poet-a person who writes poems.
Repetition/Refrain- one or more lines repeated in each stanza in a poem.

Drama- A form of literature meant to be performed by actors in front of an audience.

Playwright- The person who wrote the play.
Set-the scenery for a particular show or individual scene.
Props-is an object used on stage
Act- major divisions in a play
Scene-is a part of an act.
Script- is a written version of a play.
Stage Directions- instructions given in a play to the actors.
Dialogue- written conversation between two or more characters.
Monologue- is any speech of some duration given by a character to a second character.
Cast-actors to play the various roles in a play.
Prologue- is an opening to a play or story that establishes the context and gives background details.
