Unit 3

picks up where Unit 2 left off asking students to choose and analyze a rhetorical text on the topic of gender with the goal of producing an analysis essay. The remainder of the unit is devoted to sequenced activities that will guide you through the process of writing a strong paper – from arriving at and focusing your topic; to developing, supporting, and shaping your argument through the recursive processes of invention, drafting, revision, and editing; and, finally, to proofreading and evaluating your final paper. As part of this process, you’ll not only critique your own work, you’ll learn to give pointed feedbackto your peers and will, in turn, receive and weigh feedback on your own writing.

• Literary Nonfiction- type of writing that employs the literary techniques usually associated with fiction or poetry to report on persons, places, and events in the real world.
• Personal Narrative- is a form of writing in which the writer relates one event.
• Memoir- is a collection of memories that an individual writes about moments or events, both public or private, that took place in the subject's life.
• Biography- an account of someone's life written by someone else.
• Autobiography-an account of a person's life written by that person.
• Persuade-cause (someone) to believe something, especially after a sustained effort.
• Convince-cause (someone) to believe firmly in the truth of something.
• Fallacy-faulty reasoning; misleading or unsound argument (Ex. "the notion that the camera never lies is a fallacy")
• Rhetoric-is a technique of using language effectively and persuasively in spoken or written form.
• Refute-prove (a statement or theory) to be wrong or false; disprove.
• Premise-to introduce or preface.
• Stereotype- a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.
• Viewpoint-is a point of view on a certain subject.
• Author’s Claim- is the statement that assert a point, belief, or truth the requires supporting evidence.
• Loaded Terms- words and phrases that have strong emotional implications and involve strongly positive or negative reactions beyond their literal meaning.
• Caricatures-a picture, description, or imitation of a person or thing in which certain striking characteristics are exaggerated in order to create a comic or grotesque effect.
• Leading Questions-a question that prompts or encourages the desired answer.
• False Assumptions- a logical fallacy in which a flawed idea emerges when a reader connects information solely using inference, failing to consider other possible interpretations.
• Fact- a statement that can be proven true using reliable sources.
• Opinion- a belief based on thoughts or feelings rather than on facts.
• Incorrect Premises- a logical fallacy that uses a faulty idea as the foundation of an argument.
• Dependent Clause- is a group of words with a subject and a verb. It does not express a complete thought so it is not a sentence and can't stand alone.
• Adverbial-is an individual word (that is, an adverb), a phrase (an adverbial phrase), or a clause (an adverbial clause) that can modify a verb, an adjective, or a complete sentence. (Ex. I left school immediately.)
