Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to participate in place-based experiential activities with a cultural mentor, such as hiking, snowshoeing, and canoeing. These are an exciting way to connect with peers, the outdoors, and culture. In addition, events that help with student success and empowerment will be shared as they become available.
Elementary students will have the opportunity to take part in after school programs that get them active, while having fun and learning.
Please see below for a list of upcoming events available for students and guardians. To get more information, or to register for an event, please contact the Indigenous Success Advocate at your school, or Stephanie Kates at skates@deltaschools.ca.

CEDAR STEM Outreach and Mentorship Program
CEDAR, which stands for Cross-cultural Education through Demonstration, Activity and Recreation, is a program established to provide fun learning opportunities, in a culturally relevant context, in order to help Indigenous youth develop a comfortable relationship with the UBC Campus, Faculty, and the UBC Indigenous community. CEDAR campers get a whirlwind tour of the research being conducted by students and researchers around campus. They also take part in daily arts & crafts and outdoor recreational activities. All the while, campers learn about the wealth of post-secondary educational opportunities that exist right in their own backyard. CEDAR programming focuses on balance and respecting the spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical parts of ourselves.
Every year, CEDAR Summer camp provides an opportunity for approximately 30 local Indigenous youth between the ages of 8-12 to explore UBC campus through fun and interactive programming. The dates for the 2025 CEDAR Camp are July 14th through July 25th. It’s a day camp and runs from 8:30am to 3:30pm .

Canoe Journey
Join students in grades 10-12 from the Delta and Coquitlam School Districts for a meaningful one-day canoe journey alongside Nathan Wilson and Vanessa Butler on Thursday, May 22nd. As a puller in the District Journey canoe, you will paddle along the Fraser River, traveling from Deas Island Regional Park to Wellington Point, with stops along the way.
This journey is a celebration of your achievements. The challenges of paddling together symbolize the obstacles you have overcome in your school journey, while arriving at the final destination serves as a powerful metaphor for reaching an important milestone - graduation.
You can participate as either a puller or a member of the ground crew, but grade 12's will be prioritized. Training will be provided for those paddling. The event will take place rain or shine.
Morning snacks will be provided, and we will stop at Elliott Street Wharf for lunch.
Pullers will be required to attend a minimum of one training day on either April 16, May 1, May 8, or May 15.
