Meaning and Significance of Line Drawing

         Line drawing is a drawing in different ways that creates lines by means of scratching, dragging, drawing, rubbing, etc. Methods and materials are not complicated such as pencils, crayons, charcoal sticks etc. Line drawing is an important starting point for anyone interested in all fields of arts. (Lap Amphairat. 2547:4)

        Aree Suthipan (2527:1-2) says that “drawing” means scraping, dragging, scratching, drawing, writing with different materials or stationery on the plane (level) to see the desired shape, and to create mutual understanding between human beings. This is to inform, suggest, appreciate the beauty and values of pictures. Techniques, methods, patterns and styles are included in many paintings and drawings. Hence, both theory and practice must be studied together.

       Sompoch Upa-in (2527:1-2) says that “Line drawing” is to convey what is seen or touched as a symbol. Since there are no lines in nature, so when we sense something, we perceive as a three-dimension, but can only interpret the 3D meanings in the contour condition by systems of light and shadow in various values and convey that sense of shape or figure on a piece of paper.

       Drawing is to draw lines and to sweep weight with materials on a plane back and forth to create pictures. (Tienchai Tangpornprasert, 2544:2)

            Drawing according to the Royal Institute’s Dictionary means the subject about various drawings.  The word “draw” means to scratch, to scrape or to drag lines to make patterns or various pictures. (Royal Institute’s Dictionary, 2538:761)

The Importance of Line Drawing

Line drawing or drawing is an important basic for art and almost design learners. It is a basic training skill to control the use of hands in relationship with eyes, and to accurately sketch in size, shape, proportion, light and shadow shading, according to the actual visible object model. Line drawing is a skill that is used in conjunction with the study of all other types of arts. A person with drawing skills is able to plan basic artwork before performing it. It also helps in sketching to complete the next task or in designing various tasks in the future.

Summary

       Line drawing refers to drawing in different ways that creates line drawings by dragging, scraping, drawing, rubbing with different kinds of materials or stationery on the plane level to conceive the figures or desired shapes. It can also create understanding, a sense of beauty, appreciate the various values of pictures. The study of line drawing requires both theoretical and practical studies at the same time.

The importance of line drawing  It is an important basic subject for art and design learners. It is a basic training skill to control the use of hands in relationship with eyes, especially in correct sketching in shape, size, proportions as well as the accurate light shading as seen in various objects.

Patterns of line drawing 

Patterns of line drawing are as follows:

1. Realistic pattern is a line drawing that transfers forms, shapes, appearances as it actually appears in nature, including a picture of people, animals or objects. The drawer transfers size, proportion, light and shade to resemble the realia as seen as much as possible.

2. Semi-abstract pattern is a line drawing that transfers forms, shapes of objects as seen in daily lives, whether it is nature, object, thing, distorted from the reality by shortening or adding. However, it can also show the traces of the original prototypes in nature.

3. Abstract pattern is a line drawing that transfers the beauty depends upon the structure, form, shape, line stroke, color, weight, etc. of an object or a part of nature or object, regardless of reality as it appears. Viewers of abstract art as well as artists creating the work realize and appreciate the beauty of abstract art, as individuals can imagine.

Summary

Line drawings are divided into 3 patterns:

1. Realistic pattern means a line drawing that transfers the image of nature and objects as realia seen with one’s own eyes, emphasizing shape, light and shadow as it appears.

2. Semi-abstract pattern means a line drawing that transfers forms, shapes distorted from the reality, but still shows the traces of the original prototypes.

3. Abstract pattern means a line drawing that transfers the beauty in forms, structures, shapes etc. of nature and objects regardless of reality or realism of objects and nature, depending on the artists’ idea or imagination which are farthest apart from the reality.
