A hearing impairment is when a child has significant difficulty hearing verbal language to a point where it affects speech and language development. Hearing impairments vary in type and severity. Hearing impairments involve working with a school-based audiologist to determine a plan of action.
Addressing a hearing loss at school may look like:
Use of amplifiers or FM systems in classrooms
Learning American Sign Language and working with an ASL interpreter
Children wearing hearing aids or cochlear implants
Strategies such as seating close to the front of the classroom, visuals, or note-taking tools
