We live in a world where digital is everything to America. If you think about it, it is the most inconvenient choice to carry cash longterm. We live in a digital world, physical money is slowly but surely losing worth, we've already lost the penny, do you think taking away paper is beyond our financial system?
Not only are you able to track your spending, you can budget monthly and have a visual idea of your spending habits. When you think about it, if we lived in a cash only world, we would be spending a whole lot more than we would know. Now you may argue,
“Holding physical money helps you be more cautious than online, you don't understand being broke until you're outside counting coins like a homeless man.”
To be fair, with that perspective, spending cash can make you feel more empowered with your spending and more aware of your finances, sporadically, this falls under the safety net cash emotionally gives you. Even if holding cash and managing it makes you feel more in control, are you really benefiting from it? Are you really protecting your wealth longterm? Furthermore, cash does not grow systematically. With cash alone, you can't invest in the stock market, you can't put interest on paper you hold in your hand. Eventually you will end up depositing your cash on your card or digital wallet anyway, just because cash alone limits the accessibility of cross border transactions, immediate conversions of currency, fraud protection, and furthermore; long-term security.
