Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are so proud of our students and the multiple ways they continue to show their thinking during Remote Learning. It has been so nice to "virtually visit" RealTime learning blocks to see engaged students, participating and have rich conversations. Last week, we had a school-wide focus on learning about human rights leaders and activists such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Senator , Wanda Bernard, Malala Yousafzai, Lincoln Alexander and Viola Desmond. From kindergarten to grade 8, students discussed current events, made real life connections and focused on the importance of voice, advocacy and allyship.
Bell Let's Talk Day is on Thursday, January 28th. This day recognizes the importance of having open conversations about mental health and well-being. In recognition of this day, we will have a school wide focus on well-being for the week. Daily topics will include the importance of movement and exercise, calming strategies, and Zones of Regulation. The closure period may be a challenging time for some students, and we want to ensure that we continue to motivate and encourage everyone.
As we continue this period of Remote Learning, students are encouraged to:
• keep showing up on time with a positive attitude;
• communicate any challenges with teachers and staff so that we can support you;
• continue participating in class and completing assigned work;
• ask for help if you need it.
Schools will be closed for a few more weeks with our return to in-person learning on Wednesday, February 10th. As part of our return to in-person learning, it will be mandatory that students in grades 1 to 3 wear a mask, in addition to students in grades 4 to 8. We strongly encourage kindergarten students to wear masks as well.
Our school office is closed at this time. Should you need to contact our secretaries, Mrs. Gill or Mrs. Hindle, or admin, please email us at Violadesmondps@ddsb.ca. Response time may be delayed for messages left on the school's voicemail.
We look forward to another wonderful week of online learning!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Brusselers and Mrs. Thomas - Administrative Team
*Please note that staggered start times have been implemented to support RealTime learning opportunities and sharing tech devices among siblings. FlexTime learning will take place throughout the day. Please refer to your child's individual schedule that will be posted on Google Classroom for more detailed information.*
As we transition to virtual learning this week at Viola Desmond, we would like to explain the difference between RealTime and FlexTime learning opportunities.
RealTime Learning - These are learning opportunities where the educators are online at the same time with students to facilitate community circles, teach lessons or lead small group activities. At Viola, our RealTime learning opportunities will take place during Google Meets in the morning and afternoon.
FlexTime Learning - These are learning opportunities where students have the flexibility to access the work at any time. Educator teams will post activities, tasks, and assignments on Google Classroom.
Our model for this week has taken into careful consideration of family schedules and the need to share devices between siblings. We are following the Ministry Guides of 180 minutes of RealTime Learning for Kindergarten students and 225 minutes of RealTime Learning for students in Grade 1 to 8. Kindergarten educator teams and teachers have established office hours to support FlexTime learning and to answer parent questions.
The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Baptist minister and political activist who is arguably the most famous leader of the American Civil Rights Movement. King was named Man of the Year by Time Magazine in 1963, and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964—then the youngest man ever to have received the award. He turned over the Nobel Prize money to further the Civil Rights Movement. King was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee, where he had planned to lead a march in sympathy with striking garbage workers. It was only 9 years later, in 1977, when he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Jimmy Carter. In the United States, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed on the third Monday of January each year. The struggle to have this day recognized as a federal holiday involved Stevie Wonder’s song “Happy Birthday,” and a petition with 6 million signatures—the largest petition in US history. The day was observed first in 1986, and was finally observed in all states in 2000. For his promotion of non-violence and racial equality, King is considered a peacemaker and martyr by many people around the world.
Lincoln MacCauley Alexander was born on Jan. 21, 1922. He practised law for more than 10 years and in 1968 was elected MP of Hamilton West, becoming Canada's first black MP. He held his seat for four terms, but left in 1980 to become chair of Ontario's Worker's Compensation Board. In 1985, he was named Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, the first black man to hold that title. He was also the University of Guelph's longest-serving chancellor from 1991 to 2007. He died in October 2012 at the age of 90.
January is:
International Day of Commemoration in Memory of Victims of the Holocaust - January 27
On November 1, 2005, the United Nations General Assembly voted unanimously to designate January 27 the "International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust." This day coincides with the day in 1945 when the Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated. The UN resolution also rejected any denial of the Holocaust as a historical event, either in full or in part, and member states are urged to teach the lessons of the Holocaust to help prevent future genocide. This day has been observed since 2001 as Holocaust Memorial Day in many European countries. Observed within the State of Israel, and Jews world-wide; Yom HaShoah vea hagvora, the "Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust and the courage of the Jewish people," on the 27th day of the month Nisan on the Hebrew calendar, which usually falls in April.
“I raise up my voice-not so I can shout but so that those without a voice can be heard...we cannot succeed when half of us are held back.”
― Malala Yousafzai
Students, with the help of parents/guardians are also required to complete a self-assessment of their health and symptoms of COVID-19 and must not enter the school if they are displaying any symptoms.
Hand Sanitizing and Handwashing Hygiene
Hand washing and sanitizing routines will be more frequent for our students. Staff will model, instruct and monitor hand washing and sanitizing.
Many parents have made inquiries about teaching and learning plans. We will do our best to provide resources and communications through our school twitter account (@violadesmondps) to keep you up-to-date.
The By-Law Officer from the Town of Ajax observed the parking situation during entry and afternoon exit periods, and expressed significant concern due to many safety infractions observed.
The By-Law Officer has asked the school to remind parents and guardians to safely follow road rules and laws during high peak times of morning drop off and end of day pick up.
While the parking loops remain closed, parents are encouraged to park on Formosa, Turnerbury or the side streets during these times. You are encouraged to walk your child to school as well.
Please refrain from stopping in the middle of the side street to pick up your child. This poses a significant safety risk for on-coming traffic.
It is important to adhere to the reduced driving speeds within a school zone.
The By-Law Officer will be issuing tickets moving forward to infractions that have been observed.
