This unit is the foundation of the course. It is here that we will begin your journey into social advocacy! You will get an introduction to what we mean when we speak about “equity” and “social justice” and will examine why it is important to seek, advocate, and defend everyone's access to such. You will be introduced to a variety of theoretical perspectives and how they are used to examine and explain issues related to social justice, equity and the inherent intersectionalities within. And you will look at how social action initiatives seek to address the inequities in our society, and the class will co-create a set of success criteria to determine what a successful response is, as further on in this course you will be expected to create your own social action initiative and put into practice all that you have learned about being a social activist.
