Ideas for structuring your day

Although it may be tempting to forget about dealing with routines and structure during periods of home learning, it can help children and young people feel safe during periods of uncertainty when there is some structure and routine. Ideas for supporting this include:

  • Having set times for going to bed and getting up in the morning where possible.

  • Build in times for fresh air and exercise

  • Create a variety of activities such as games, art, music, play and reading

  • Helpful websites include: The Literacy Trust

  • Limit their time on electronic devices where possible

  • Respect each other’s privacy and give space where you can

  • Take time to review the day’s activities to help them get a sense of accomplishment.

Seesaw

Dundee City Council have provided Seesaw for Schools licenses for all nursery and primary pupils. The use of this app is at the discretion of the school's Head Teacher. Your child's school should provide details of how pupils can access Seesaw for Home Learning and how you, as a parent/carer , can engage with your child's learning.

Glow

All children from primary 4 should have been provided with a Glow log-in and password. Glow can be accessed from any device that has access to the internet. Pupils will be able to log-in to Glow and access information in a few ways: the main ones in DCC will be email and Microsoft Teams. Some teachers have chosen to use Google classrooms. These online platforms will your children to have some contact with their teachers. Staff will have organised how they are contacting their individual classes, and this varies from school to school.

Online Resources

We have uploaded resources on how to help your child access glow and its key features, along with generic learning resources and most importantly, support for the wellbeing of you and your child at this difficult time. Although it is important that daily activities/tasks can be completed at home to keep your child mentally stimulated, this is a difficult time and we do not want you to feel under pressure to complete all tasks. Each family will have differing priorities and challenges and it is imperative that we keep all of our children and young people safe, happy and well. These resources are designed to be additional support should you need it at this time.

Twitter

We recommend that you keep an eye on the Dundee City Council Twitter feed (@DundeeCouncil) and your own school's Twitter feed for any extra information or support you may need. From time to time @DigiLearnDundee will also post ideas for how to support digital learning at home.

Be at the heart of your child’s learning during COVID-19

Parents and families are dealing with a vast amount of information on a wide range of topics about COVID-19. The information below is intended to help provide guidance and support to parents and families regarding their child’s learning at home and signpost to other information which may be of interest. Information on Parentzone Scotland will continue to be reviewed and updated as required, so please revisit the website.

What is learning at home?

Learning at home is a broad term to describe the learning which happens outwith early learning and childcare settings and schools. It can take place through everyday activities including play and general family life, such as food preparation and cooking. It can also happen through curriculum related activities, homework, reading and sharing books. Activities for learning at home can be specifically designed to help parents engage in their child’s learning and build upon the learning from early learning and childcare settings and schools.

Engaging in your child’s learning can make a real difference to how well they do. Making your home a positive home learning environment plays a big part in this, no matter what age your child is.
