Rehearsal Expectations

PHS will let you check out a flag pole to use and practice with when you are a member of the color guard or winter guard. You will be allowed to bring this flag pole home so you can practice on your own time. You will need to bring the flag with you to all practices.

I will review with students where they should bring their flag poles when they arrive at school in the morning on rehearsal days. Students should NOT carry their flags or auxiliary equipment with them from class to class.

Auxiliary equipment must be carried in provided bags at all times in and out of the school. Parents are encouraged NOT to bring their student's auxiliary equipment to school for their student if they forget. We will find a way to rehearse without it because it can lead to misunderstandings and is a safety concern when adults carry this equipment.

Bus drivers are always changing and not always used to students carrying 6' flag poles. If you speak with them ahead of time to tell them you plan on bringing a flag on the bus on rehearsal days for a school activity, they can tell you where they want you to store the flag safely while you are on the bus.

You will also be required to join a Google Classroom for communication, information, assignments, instructional videos, and other useful items.

Color guard is a uniquely challenging sport. Many beginners will have a difficult time at first and may begin to feel frustrated. Please keep in mind that with careful attention to details, repetition, practice and effort, you will be able to get to the next level in no time!

Guard may require running, jumping, and other physical activities, sometimes you may have sore muscles. In addition, this activity involves 6' flag poles, wood rifles, and metal padded sabres.  When students are first learning how to do a skill on the equipment, they are more likely to accidentally hit themselves or others with the equipment, which can cause bruising or other minor injuries.
