Course Description: Drawing & Painting 1
This is a beginner to intermediate course addressing matters in the areas of perspective, still-life, portrait, landscape, and abstract paintings using graphite, color pencils, watercolors, acrylics. Students will focus on developing content and personal expression.
Students will be guided through a series of projects concerning visual expression. These projects will further advance understanding of the formal elements of drawing through various media, as well as develop conceptual possibilities within the art work. This course is an intermediate to beginner level drawing & painting class where emphasis is placed largely on understanding the elements and principles of art and design.
COURSE GOALS:
1. To advance one's drawing & painting skills.
2. To understand the use of elements and principles in the students art
3. To promote visual thinking.
4. To introduce a critical framework for thinking about and looking at art.
5. To develop a knowledge of drawing's formal and material elements.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
· Students may be required to work outside of class. My goal is to use class time wisely so all projects can be completed in class. If a student is absent they will need to make up work at home.
· Students are required to actively use their sketchbooks.
· Students are required to be on time for all classes.
· Students are required to be engaged in class discussions and critiques.
SKETCHBOOKS: Sketchbook assignments will go hand-in-hand with Painting Assignments. These assignments could take minutes or hours, the amount of time you put into them is up to you. Also, how you approach the use of your sketchbook is up to you. You will often be asked to make preliminarily sketches and “official sketches” for an assignment, but I would also like to have you fill the sketchbook with doodles, musings, ideas, writing down guys and girls phone numbers (not really). It should be the thing where you write and draw (brainstorm)....have it with you at each class. You will be graded for the work you do in your sketchbook.
HOMEWORK: You will be expected to put 3 hours (at a minimum!) of work into your sketchbook assignments, readings, and studio work outside of class. Getting behind WILL be a problem for you in terms of your grade and your work. All assignments must be completed on time - there are no exceptions unless otherwise discussed with me.
GRADING
Weekly Sketchbook Journaling….20% : Weekly Sketchbook Assignment, Quizzes, Critiques, Reflections
Project Assessments….80% : Completed Drawing & Painting Projects
Late Work
Late work will be accepted with point a deduction penalty. I do not believe anyone who submits late work should receive an A even if your quality of work is exceptional. So be on time with your work. If your work submitted for weekly sketchbook / projects is of very poor quality / rushed you will not receive full credit. If you put effort into your work you will be rewarded with a good grade.
