Here's what's happening in October:
In kindergarten and first grade, we are learning about personal space and why it is important to keep our hands and feet to ourselves. These skills will help us "drive our own bus" by being safe inside and outside of the classroom as well as become kind friends "who love our passengers"!
In second grade, we are learning about "a bug and a wish" and how saying "it bugs me when ____ I wish you would ____" can help us peacefully resolve conflict with our classmates and friends. We will also be exploring what a Big Deal looks like versus a Little Deal and learning to decide when we can solve problems on our own versus when we may need an adult to help us out.
In third grade, we finished learning about our brains and why we can sometimes feel out of control when our emotions are big. This month we will be practicing different calming skills that we can use in the classroom to help us when we are feeling out of control or are having big emotions. This will help create a foundation for us to practice our problem solving skills next month as this is the first step to positively resolving a problem. Building these self-efficacy skills will also help students be able to fully attend to learning in their classrooms when they are in need.
In fourth and fifth grade, we will be talking about healthy friendships. Students will problem solve through different friendship scenarios and learn about the qualities of a positive friendship. In addition to being able to identify when a friendship is positive or negative, students will also reflect on their skills with regard to being a kind and caring friend and classmate.
Sixth grade will be diving into organization. We will be talking about what it means to be organized, including having an organized backpack, using a planner and a clock to help us stay on track, and making sure we have a dedicated place to study and work at home that is organized with the tools they need to succeed. Students will also get to apply all of these skills by organizing their backpacks and checking their online homework document and Infinite Campus to make sure they are effectively using their MHE Planners.
