What is Bullying?

At MHE, we help students understand bullying by defining it as:

When someone hurts your feelings or body on purpose
It happens over and over again even though you ask them to STOP
It is unfair and one-sided

Students are taught the acronym BOOO (being mean, on purpose, over and over, and it's one-sided)

At Mammoth Heights, we strive to provide a safe environment for all students. Bullying or harassment of any type is not tolerated.

The Colorado Department of Education defines bullying as:

"Any written or verbal expression, or physical or electronic act or gesture, or a pattern thereof, that is intended to coerce, intimidate, or cause any physical, mental, or emotional harm to any student."

"School bullying researchers typically define bullying by highlighting three components that differentiate it from other forms of aggression: the behavior is intentional, repeated or likely to be repeated, and marked by an imbalance of power."

"Bullying is not teasing, fights between students of equal power, or conflict. When students tease one another, it is meant to be affectionate and not cause harm. Often, students who bully do not want to be caught and will claim that they are only teasing another student. Signs that indicate teasing is actually bullying include, (a) the teasing is hostile instead of affectionate, (b) the student teasing intends to hurt the student being teased, and (c) the student being teased is harmed by the behavior."

Students have access to this form on their Clever pages as well as paper copies that are available from their teachers or at the drop boxes located outside of Mrs. Betschart or Ms. R' offices

Anytime your student brings up the word "bully" we encourage you to discuss the situation with them and report any concerning incidents on their behalf

Stopbullying.gov is a site dedicated to helping the community with bullying prevention and intervention
