Reading homework will count for both reading and writing. It will be assigned at the beginning of the week and due the following Monday.
There will be a predictable rotation of the reading homework activities that will be as follows:
Reading Organizer using the Scholastic News, the back side of the Scholastic News with evidence underlined in the article for the multiple choice answers, and then a Reading Log to be used with the independent reading book that the student is working on. Students will also have three book reports assigned each semester for their independent reading.
Reading Organizers:
*The writing expectation is for answers to be written in complete sentences with beginning capital and ending period.
*The facts need to pertain to the key/main idea of the article.
*The Most Interesting Thing I Learned CANNOT be a repeat of one of the Three Facts.
*The opinion needs to have a reason with it; ie because...
*The name/by is the author or Scholastic News.
(Student's name should be in the upper right hand corner.)
*Proper Nouns should be capitalized.
Reading Log:
*Answer all questions presented.
*Should be a well organized paragraph response for each section.
*The writing expectation is for answers to be written in complete sentences with beginning capital and ending period.
The reading logs will follow our 5th grade reading standards.
Spelling homework will be assigned at the beginning of the week and due on Thursday before the spelling test is given.
Logistics of spelling this year:
We do have differentiated lists each week that are based off of the pretest given on Friday. Students will work from a red, blue, or green list. The blue list looks like cards, but do not need to be cut out. Spelling homework is assigned on Monday and due on Thursday. The final spelling test is given on Thursday.
Studying and homework expectations:
Pretest = This is their first practice with the words. After the pretest is given, students correct their own paper by putting a dot under each letter that they compare to the correct spelling. If the word is misspelled, they should rewrite the word correctly on the line next to the misspelled word.
Homework = The Spelling Sort is on Wonders online, and most students have time to work with the words sometime in class, but please check Wednesday night to see if this has been done. This activity helps the students work with the spelling pattern for the words.
The Spelling Menu provides fun activities to help students study the words. The activities require the student to write the words, which helps with kinesthetic and visual memory for the words they are working with. One activity per week is due on Thursday to be turned in, and a parent date and signature goes in each box students try. By the turn in date for the two months, the menu should have several boxes dated and signed.
There will be a homework forecast in the Weekly Communication each week so you will know what to expect the following week with your child's homework. Please reach out if you have any questions.
