Q: When is the Science & Innovation Fair?
A: Tuesday, November 12th, 2024 from 4:00-5:15 PM.
Q: What will the event look like?
A: Students will create a cardboard game, experimental project, or research project. They will create a display board to bring to school the morning of November 12th. At the end of the day, students will set up their projects for judging and parent visits.
Q: Can I work with other people on a project?
A: Each group can have a total of TWO students. Students do not have to be in the same grade to be in a group. You can also work by yourself if you want.
Q: When can I register?
A: After you have decided on your group and the type of project you will conduct, have your parent register you using the registration link. Please remember that you will NOT receive an email confirmation until the week of November 4th. Once clicking the submit button on the registration page, scroll up to see the confirmation message.
Q: When is registration due?
A: Parents must register their student(s) by Wednesday, October 30, 2024. Every parent must register his/her own child even if your child is working in a group.
Q: Can my parents help me with my project?
A: The project should be driven and owned by the child while parents are the assistants, guinea pigs, or photographers. Keep it simple, let them problem solve and they will surprise you with their skills. Primary students might need more assistance while intermediate students should be in charge of their projects.
Q: Where do I complete the project?
A: All of the work is to be completed outside of school. If you have specific questions regarding your project, please ask Mrs. Anderegg or Mrs. Jensen.
Q: What should my display look like?
A: Each project should have a standard tri-fold display board. You can access the resource section on this website to gather display ideas and guideline. There will be a small amount of space in front of the display board.
Cardboard (Engineering) - You can bring your game to the fair for people to play. The size should fit on a tabletop (approximately 2ft. x 3ft.) Please contact Mrs. Jensen or Mrs. Anderegg for specific questions regarding size and dimensions.
Experimental - You can display an object from your project. PLEASE remember, NO live experiments or messy objects are allowed.
Research - You can display an object from your research.
Q: Can I demonstrate my experiment at the fair?
A: No active chemical reactions may be performed in the exhibit area. Examples of chemicals reactions are vinegar and baking soda volcanoes, and Diet Coke/Mentos experiments. With parent supervision, you may conduct experiments at home, take pictures, and document them on your project board.
If you have an item that aids to your display board, you may bring it to place in front of your display but it can't be an open liquid container, messy, dangerous, or something you are concerned will break. If you aren't sure if you can bring it in, contact Mrs. Anderegg or Mrs. Jensen and we can clarify.
Q: I am completing an Experiment or Research project. Can I hand out candy or other treats at the fair?
A: We want the focus of the fair to be on you sharing your projects, so there should NOT be any candy or treats being handed out. We are also going to be in the gym, so it's important that we keep the carpet clean.
Q: Can I demonstrate my cardboard game at the fair?
A: You may bring your game to the fair. Even though part of your project was to have "prizes" for playing your game, you will want to carefully consider the type of prizes you are using. They should be simple and inexpensive. One option is to show a sample of the prizes or include a photo of them on your display board.
We will be limited on our space in the gym. If your game meets the following requirements, you may bring it to the fair: fits in front of your display board, doesn't require electrical power, doesn't contain "messy" components, or contains expensive components.
Q: How will I be judged?
A: Each project will be judged on a rubric and students will earn points based upon their own projects. Primary students, those in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades, will receive participation ribbons. Intermediate students, those in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades, will be awarded ribbons based upon how they score on the rubric. Be sure to access the rubric for your category when starting your project.
Q: How will I be judged if I am working with someone who has a different rubric?
A: If a primary student (K-2) is working with an intermediate student (3-6), the project will be judged using the intermediate rubric. This will apply to all project types.
Q: What if I change my partner or decide not to participate in the fair after registering?
A: Please use the contact page to email Mrs. Anderegg or Mrs. Jensen directly.
Q: Will we celebrate?
A: Every student who registers and presents a project will be invited to a special celebration party on Friday, November 15th during school. Ribbons will be presented and we will celebrate all of the learning and hard work!
