If you like creating things, solving problems and playing games, start with a cardboard arcade game
(an engineering design) project.
Engineering is the application of science, math and technology to both creating something and solving a problem. For the cardboard arcade game project this can be:Â
1) A new and original arcade game you want to create.
2) A current arcade game you want to improve.
3) Two or more arcade games that you would like to combine into a new game.
The work you are doing for this project is similar to the design challenges we do in the Innovation Lab. Even though you are creating a cardboard game, this should be treated as an engineering design project.
THE CHALLENGE REQUIREMENTS
You need to create an arcade game, made from cardboard, that can be played by others. The players must earn a score and the game must have tickets or prizes that the player can win. This should be an original game OR an improvement/modification to an existing game.
This document will help you get started with your project and can be used by all students, grades K-6th. It will also provide you with a great checklist of items to include on your display board. It is also VERY important that you take a close look at the appropriate rubric for your grade level. Find the Spanish version of this document here.
The students in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades will not be judged on a rubric the day of the fair. They will have the opportunity to share their work and learning with a judge. These students should refer to the Project Guidelines document to help guide their process. All students in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades will receive a participation ribbon.
This is the rubric that will be used for the Cardboard Game (Engineering Design) projects. It is VERY important that you take a look at it BEFORE you begin working, WHILE you are working, and AFTER you are done working and preparing to share your work.
