We love fossils!
A fossil is any preserved remains, impressions or trace of any once-living thing from a past geological age.
We are so lucky to live in Cork City where we have fossils scattered all over the streets and buildings. These fossils are particularly common in our local limestone and the world famous Cork Marble which is really a polished limestone. And we also have some lovely imported stone here in Cork.
The Heritage Council says that “Our heritage is what we’ve inherited from the past, to value and enjoy in the present, and to preserve and pass on to future generations”. We’ve chosen a selection of some of our best fossils and made a tour for you of some of the best locations to visit. After reading our project, we’re sure you’ll agree that these urban fossils offer a unique look back through the history of life on our planet and they’re right on our doorstep!
