What are Fossils?
Fossils are the remains of living things that have been dead for a very long time, usually millions of years. They are so old that they have turned into stone. By studying fossils, scientists can learn more about the past and how animals and other life forms used to live.
How are fossils made?
Most fossils are discovered in sedimentary rock, in places that were one in or near water such as a river or the sea. When prehistoric animals or plants died they were buried under lots of sediment. While the soft parts rotted away, the hard parts like the bones, shells, teeth and even whole skeletons were fossilised.
