  • Dermatoglyphics: A preliminary tool for Blood group Typing

Introduction:

The study of the epidermal ridges on the volar aspect of the hands and feet which form a variety of pattern configurations is called “DERMATOGLYPHICS”. Dermatoglyphics is the study of epidermal ridge patterns on the palm, fingers, sole and toes. They are genetically determined and are useful in diagnosis of various genetic diseases like Diabetes mellitus. There are three types of fingerprint patterns: Arches, loops and whorls. Finger prints of both hands are not same and they persist throughout life unless there is damage to the dermis. All configurations are laid down permanently from the 3rd month of the intra-uterine life and they remain unchanged throughout the life. These patterns are inherited in form of genetic makeup of the parents but the inheritance is not purely Mendelian. They get modified during the first few weeks of the intrauterine life due to pressure on the finger pads and on the palms. Positive associations of the dermatoglyphic features with different diseases like diabetes, mongolism, schizophrenia and leprosy have been well documented in recent years.

Objectives:

1. To determine the ABO blood type and Finger print pattern of individuals.

2. To study the correlation of derrmatoglyphics with the Blood type.

Methodology:

For this research study the data was collected from different individuals at Deshbandhu College & Ramanjuan College, Kalka ji New Delhi. Prior taking the fingerprints on plane sheets, the induvial must have given their personal information like sex, regionality, blood group type and fingerprints and also trying to find out any health related issues and past medical history like diabetes, heart problems and genetic disorders. So far around 600 individuals fingerprints have been collected. Fingerprint Collection: Standard published protocol have been used to collect fingerprints up to 600 samples.

Material Used: ABO antigen Kit

Statistical Analysis: To establish correlation between different parameters of the experiment is on going on with standard statistical package.

Expected outcomes/relevance:

1. The students were endowed with baseline knowledge of finger print patterns in humans.

2. The blood typing drive was beneficial for those individual without the knowledge of their own blood type.

3. The possible conjuncture of the correlation between finger prints with blood group is a valuable tool for clinical and forensic science.

4. It served well for the students who intend to pursue career in forensic science and also helped latter in various services like IPS, and investigation agency.

Academic relevance of the Project:

Students study the fingerprints and Blood group detection topic on theoretical base in theory and practical, both in Honours and Life Science courses, so they can relate their theoretical knowledge with the research findings. After the research findings they will understand the importance between the fingerprints and blood group.

Progress Achieved:

1. Many meetings and discussions have been done with the students regarding the research topic.

  1. Before the beginning project work the literature study is being done from different journals.

  2. Later on, discussions with students have been clarified about the procedure, methodology and expected outcome of the study.

  3. Until now, 600 individual’s fingerprints have been collected.

  4. Standard statistical analysis is being done.

Future Plan:

1. Results and conclusions to be written and discussed.

2. The manuscript is being prepared for future Publication.

  • Project status: In 2020 after the announcement of a complete lockdown in the country (covid-19), the culture of Aedes aegypti was shut down. Looking at the situation and uncertainty of the pandemic, we have changed our model organism from Aedes aegypti to Dysdercus koenigii.

The new title of the project-

Assessment of effects of sub-lethal doses of ethanol and hexane extract of Ocimum sanctum on Dysdercus koenigii Fabricius (Heteroptera: Pyrrhocoridae)

Introduction:

Dysdercus koenigii Fabricius (Heteroptera: Pyrrhocoridae) is a polyphagous, heteropteran insect pest commonly called “red cotton bug”. D. koenigii causes extensive damage to standing crops of cotton plants in many parts of the world including India (Karihaloo and Kumar 2009).

Significance of study:

By applying Ocimum sanctum plant extract to D. koenigii, we will find more phytochemicals from the O. sanctum plant extract for the sustainable management of insect pests population. We can control the D. koenigii population below the economic threshold injury level so that the annual loss in the cotton (genus Gossypium) crop field will be reduced. And this will lead to the economic growth of farmers and the country.

Work done so far-

The literature survey was in progress. Culturing of D. koenigii is going on. The identification of different stages of D. koenigii life cycle was accomplished. The preparation of fresh O. sanctum leaves extract by using ethanol as solvent was completed by using the Soxhlet apparatus.

Title of Event: Wildlife Week Celebration: WILD-O-VIGUS

Number of Participants: More than 115

Description: Wildlife plays a vital role in preserving nature's biological diversity and ecological balance. Any damage to the wilderness can jeopardize the ecology as a whole. As a result, preserving flora and fauna is critical. India celebrates Wildlife Week every year from October 2nd to 8th with the goal of preserving the country's wildlife. The Department of Zoology, Deshbandhu College, commemorated “The Wildlife Week- Wild-O-Vigus” from the 4th to the 9th of October, 2021 under the auspices of IQAC and the DBT Star College Scheme, in which we organized students’ fun events throughout the week as well as a talk by an eminent molecular ecologist Prof. Uma Ramakrishnan on the 9th October to raise awareness about wildlife conservation.

Over the course of the week, we hosted six events. On 4th October we had two events; "FRAME THE FAUNA," (photography competition) in which contestants were asked to photograph the animals in their physical vicinity and the participants produced some stunning photographs. Another activity was “CREATE A CANVAS” (poster-making competition) in which participants were required to create a poster with the topic "We're not the only species, therefore live and let live" for which we received a number of well-depicted posters. On the 5th of October, we hosted “MEMEMANIA,” in which participants were given a template and instructed to create a meme about wildlife to promote a good attitude towards wildlife. On the 6th of October, we had "KEYWORD HUNT," a riddle and puzzle game. The players greatly liked "ZOOTOPIA" on the 7th of October, which consisted of three rounds: Emojiology, Camouflagellator, and Wild Decibel. On the 8th of October, "RELAY THE GRAY," an intellectual quiz tournament to evaluate wildlife awareness was held. All of the student events conducted were aimed to promote public awareness towards wildlife. All of these events witnessed participation of around 300 students from different colleges and universities.

We conducted a live webinar with Prof. Uma Ramakrishnan from NCBS, TIFR, Bangalore on 9th October, 2021 that was attended by around 115 students and faculties from various colleges and institutions from around the country. Dr. Manisha Sengar and Dr. Sandhya Rai were the Convenors and Dr Moses Rinchui and Mr. Mohd. Shazad were the Co-convenors. The convenors warmly greeted our distinguished speaker who has a long list of accomplishments in diverse disciplines.

Dr. Uma's presentation focused on how DNA can help save species from the extinction. She discussed the value of biodiversity and how it is essential for human survival. Her lecture focused on how technology has advanced to the point that we can now obtain DNA sequences in such a short amount of time. She has been studying the extinction process with her team for almost 15 years, using the tiger as a model. She highlighted scientific topics like genetic drift, population genetics, inbreeding depression, and mutation using instances from several tiger reserves and different tiger species. Her group is working to put an end to the unlawful trafficking in tiger parts. She ended her presentation by asking, "How can our actions help animals survive?" Following that, our speaker answered innumerable questions from the inquisitive audience the Q&A session. Dr. Uma then announced the winners of different events held during the week.

Invited Speaker: Ms. Deepti, Camp Leader; Mr. Anirudh Gupta, Wildlife Photographer

Title of Event: Virtual Jungle Safari to DUDWA Tiger Reserve

Number of Participants: More than 120

Description: Vice Principal, Dr. Kamal Kumar Gupta, opened the ceremony with encouraging comments. Moving forward, we imagined ourselves on a virtual ride through the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve to witness the living species. It was all about watching the habitat, species’ behavior, and their relationship with the environment. This tour consisted of little more than studying zoological specimens, walking around the wetlands, and grasslands, watching the birds hovering around and channeling our inner naturalist.

The participants got to know about the vivid location of the Reserve as it is situated in the Himalayan Terai region with excellent woodland sharing its boundaries with Nepal and surrounded by Suheli and Mohana streams and Sharda River flows.

The participants were enthralled when they saw an amazing herd of Spotted Deer, Langurs, a dancing Peacock, Swamp Deer, Barking Deer, Blue Bull, Jungle Cat, White Eyed Pipit, and a flock of migratory birds flying in from all across Ladakh.

It was a beautiful sight to see so many marshes, grasslands, animals, and rivers all around us. When the participants saw the leopard and a large tusker elephant, they were ecstatic.

Another memorable aspect of the visit was seeing tribal people coexisting with these animals in their natural habitat and enjoying a sense of interdependence. Surprisingly, we also had the opportunity to see the tribal community's craft and culture. The camp leader led us to their camp and told us about visitors' experiences there. They designed everything to be environmentally sustainable, taking into account the treasures we receive from nature. They provide so many exciting, indulgent activities for tourists to experience the camp life to the utmost.

They have around 450 different types of fauna, including 100 Tigers on their own. The session was very enriching and interactive. It was just like a guided tour.

The Zoology Department received a huge amount of positive feedback regarding this virtual yet vibrant tour of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, therefore it was a huge success. People were ecstatic to get the chance to take part in such a realistic virtual tour.

The event came to a close with a formal vote of appreciation and a bag full of knowledge about our own biodiversity, as well with the sensation of sitting inside a jeep and exploring this tiger reserve.
