Description: On April 8, Department of Chemistry organized a webinar on the topic “Infrared spectroscopy: Fundamentals and Application” under the aegis of IQAC, Deshbandhu College and DBT Star College Scheme on the zoom platform. The eminent speaker was Dr Ranjana Mehrotra, Former Head, Physico-Mechanical Metrology Division, CSIR-National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi, India. The conveners of the event were Dr Parul Singh and Dr Aparna Shekhar. Webinar was moderated by Ms Palak Pal, student of BSc (Industrial Chemistry). The event was started with Saraswati Vandana. Prof Deo Nandan Kumar, TIC, Department of Chemistry greeted the guest speaker and audience and gave a brief overview of chemistry department Deshbandhu College. Dr Namita Gandhi, Department coordinator, DBT Star College scheme, expressed her gratitude to Principal Deshbandhu College and welcome the guest and participants. Dr Seema Lal introduced the speaker to the audience. Dr Mehrotra started the talk with Fundamentals of Infrared spectroscopy and then gave deep insight into instrumentation and applications of the technique. She has insisted students to visit National Physical laboratory to get exposure to the instruments. The topic of the webinar was of great interest to the students. They got greatly benefitted by the talk. The lecture was followed by question answer session. The speaker clears every doubt of participants. Description: Department of Chemistry, Deshbandhu College, University of Delhi has organized second lecture of Motivational lecture series on the topic of “What has Science done for our Society?” under the aegis of IQAC and DBT star college scheme on 21st October 2021 at 11:30 am.

Ms Palak Pal has hosted the event and invited Professor Deo Nandan Kumar, TIC, Department of Chemistry to inaugurate the event with Saraswati Vandana and lamp lightening. Professor Kumar expressed his thanks and gratitude to Professor Rajiv Aggarwal, Principal and Professor Kamal Kumar Gupta, Vice Principal of Deshbandhu College for supporting and providing infrastructure facilities. Dr Umesh Kumar, program convenor, invited and introduced the speaker of the webinar Professor A. K. Ganguli to the audience.

Professor Ganguli delivered a very motivational, detailed, interesting, inspiring and enthusiastic lecture on the contribution of science in development of society. Before starting his talk, Professor Ganguli motivated undergraduate students for exploring their potential and gave the quote “money not drive yourself consciousness does”. He dedicated his lecture to Sir Stephan Hawkins and emphasized that one should always be thankful to the God for his blessing in the form of a perfect body.

During his talk, Ganguli Sir has discussed in detail about the novel science inventions during the time line of year 1218 to 2018. He highlighted that a single vaccine took decades to develop in earlier time bot during covid era, hundreds of vaccine were developed by scientists and researchers due to the availability of high tech science and technology and controlled the pandemic. Professor Ganguli have discussed in detail about some major inventions that played an emergent role in the development and betterment of mankind like inventions of Galileo, telescope, thermometer, photocopier, microwave, air conditioner, optical fibres, magnetic strips on credit card, barcode, GPS, spacewalk, laptop mobile blue ray DVD, dip pen nanolithography, self-cleaning clothes, shark skin technology and many more.

Ganguli Sir, concluded his lecture by motivating student to develop observation skills, curiosity, never complain attitude and not to turndown any opportunity.

"Skill Up" - A Workshop on Laboratory Safety and Management for Chemistry Lab Staff

Description: Department of Chemistry, Deshbandhu College, University of Delhi, has successfully organized a three-days workshop on Laboratory Safety and Management for Chemistry laboratory Staff under the aegis of DBT Star College Scheme and IQAC from the 22nd – 24th of December 2021.

The workshop successfully achieved its aim to impart hands-on and basic chemistry laboratory safety and management skills for the laboratory staffs. More than 35 participants from different Indian University, different colleges of Delhi University, different Department of our college and different institutions participated in this workshop from different parts of the countries. Total six sessions were conducted in this workshop which comprises of total 17 lectures by our eminent faculty members.

The workshop has covered almost all the broad Chemistry laboratory safety and management topics ranging from Chemical safety their handling and safe disposal, Fire hazards and safety, Electrical safety, Basic lab instrumentations, maintenance of equipment and First Aid management by a series of lectures cum practical demonstrations, how to prepare solutions, calibration of apparatus, accurate measurement, accurate weighing, why borosilocate glass , pictorial presentation of apparatus, How to arrange chemical in store etc delivered by our eminent faculty members.

Description: Department of Chemistry, Deshbandhu College, under the aegis of IQAC, Deshbandhu College has successfully organized an online one day International symposium entitled “Chemical Wisdom by her” on January 31, 2022. The purpose of this symposium was to highlight the contribution of women scientists and promote the women empowerment in the field of science. This symposium is supposed to build stronger networks of women scientists and developing their capability to serve as leaders in scientific field.

The inauguration function of this event was graced by the Chief Guest Professor Balaram Pani, Dean of Colleges, University of Delhi. The chairman, Governing body of the Deshbandhu College, Mr. R. N. Vats, Principal Prof Rajiv Aggarwal, and Vice Principal Prof Kamal Kumar Gupta also enlightened the participants with their valuable thoughts during the inaugural session of the symposium. Our special guest of the event was Dr Praveen Dhamija (Advisor- Skill Council for Green Jobs, Government of India, Former-Advisor/Scientist G-Ministry of New and Renewable Energy). The e-symposium booklet of this event was also launched during the inaugural function.

This one day symposium was comprised of two scientific sessions. The Eminent speakers of the symposium, Prof H. Ila (Honorary Professor from JNCASR), Dr Khushbu Khushwaha (Associate editor at Wiley), Prof. Shivani B. Mishra (University of South Africa) and Dr. Sumati Bhatia (Freie Universität Berlin, Germany) delivered the very interesting and knowledgeable lectures about the synthesis of biologically important heterocycles, good manuscript writing skills, development of nanomaterials by sol-gel technology for various applications and responding to viruses with polymer materials. Two separate innovative and creative poster sessions and an inquisitive quiz session was also organized during this symposium.

This one day International symposium “Chemical Wisdom by her” received over 750 registrations and 68 posters under experimental and theoretical sections in the area of Health and Medicine, Green Chemistry, Women in Sciences, Nanotechnology, biofuels, Environmental remediation and many more. Participants of the symposium were the undergraduates, postgraduates, research scholars and faculty members from Deshbandhu college, other colleges of Delhi University, other Universities and academic institutions of India and from abroad. Total six winners from poster session were announced during valedictory session of the symposium including three under Experimental section and three under theoretical section each. There were three winners in quiz session. It was a great learning experience for all.

The inauguration ceremony of this event was started by the moderator, Dr. Namita Gandhi, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, Deshbandhu College with virtual Saraswati vandana to mark the beginning of fortunate journey. She welcomed and invited all the dignitaries, chief guest, invited speakers, chairman, prinicipal and vice principal one by one for their welcome address. Dr Umesh Kumar, convenor of the conference then welcomed all and introduced the objectives of the ICRACS-2022. He said that all the major area of research related to chemical science, health, environment and society have been covered here. Prof Balram Pani, Chief Guest of the vent congratulated Department of Chemistry and organizing committee members and highlighted that chemistry is not a subject, it is a life line which is applied in the medical stream for the treatment of each disease by the use of novel drugs. He also said that chemistry is present everywhere in our society. Dr. S. K. Varshney, guest of honor, congratulated all and said that existing technology in chemistry has a great significance for the development of environment and society. He said that chemistry is a complex subject in itself as it covers all major concern fields i.e. discovery and development of alternative source of fuel (production of hydrogen), development of biodegradable polymers, treatment of toxic waste dumpling, hazardous chemical material and contaminated water, reuse of the waste material also. Prof Ashok K. Prasad, ead department of Chemistry, congratulated Teacher-In-Charge, Prof. Deo Nandan Kumar, convenors and organizing committee for conducting such a wonderful e-conference. He states that vaccine was discovered for the treatment of Covid-19 virus by the hard work of our chemists. He also delivered his best wishes to the speakers who have expertise in their field. e-abstract book of ICRACS-2022 was launched in virtual mode by the moderator. Prof Sushila Singhal gave a brief introduction of keynote speaker Prof. Maya Shankar Singh (FNA, FASc, FNASc) Department of Chemistry, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh India, and invited him for his lecture on the topic “The Wonderful Chemistry of -Enolic dithioesters: A Sustainable Approach Towards C-C and C-X Bond Formation”. He delivered a wonderful lecture and focused his talk on hetero bonds, free radicals, pericyclic reaction, addition reaction, poly functional molecules, alkylation/arylation, cross and chainlam coupling, chemical, expedient electrochemical synthesis, metal and catalyst free one pot cascade coupling etc. After completion of lecture, certificate of honor & appreciation and e-momento were presented to him. Description: Shree. Rajesh Goyal Sir started his lecture by telling the differences between technical writing, scientific writing & creative writing. Various aspects of these three writing skills were discussed for e.g in the form of posters, slogans, articles, research paper, user guides & manuals for any instrument/product, policy making, FAQs etc. He told about his exposure to technical writing of important documents while being a scientist in DRDO. Also, he talked about the importance of learning technical writing skills by giving daily life examples. His lecture went for 1 hour, comprising of: four stages of documentation, rules to remember to be a technical writer, future prospects & demand of technical writers in industries and five categories of technical writing viz. Narrative writing, Descriptive writing, Persuasive writing, Explosive writing & Creative writing. He discussed each type in detail with examples. He ended his talk by giving an e-slogan for students that is “Just write words to say right things”. His lecture was vey descriptive & inspired not only the students but also the faculty members. Audience expressed their appreciation for the speaker through chat box. After the fantabulous lecture, the session was open for questions to which Dr. Goyal adequately answered.

Description: Department of Chemistry, Deshbandhu College under the aegis of DBT Star College Scheme and IQAC organized 3rd lecture of Motivational Lecture Series entitled "Integrated Approach for Molecular imaging" on the occasion of National Science Day on February 28, 2022.

Ms Dakshina, a final year student of BSc (P) APS Industrial Chemistry started the event with virtual lamp lighting ceremony and Saraswati Vandana. Dr Aparna Shekhar, Assistant Professor Department of Chemistry and program coordinator of this webinar briefed the gathering about importance of National Science day and introduced the speaker.

Dr Raunak, eminent speaker of the day, enlightened the audience on the topic entitled "Integrated Approach for Molecular imaging". During her lecture she highlighted the contribution of DRDO in the health sector. She also emphasized on the applications of molecular imaging in biomedical sciences with thorough elaboration of key steps in molecular imaging. Dr Raunak explained how the molecular imaging and diagnosis revolutionised the healthcare sector. With the help of specific markers, the screening, diagnosis , treatment and monitoring of several diseases can be taken up with more ease. She has explained the functioning and applications nuclear imaging utilizing Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Single Positron Emission Tomography (SPECT) in detail. Dr Raunak also discussed the chemistry of nuclear reactions ,isotopes formation and designing of specific imaging prob for targeting a specific moiety.

The question and answer session was taken up by Dr Parul Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Deshbandhu College.
