I make MESSES
I make MISTAKES
But deep inside
I got what it takes
I am an ARTIST!
March ART Madness
For the month of March the school will be voting for their favorite artists in the March ART Madness! Every March I put up 16 artists and the school votes every week on their favorite artist until the end of March when there is a winner. It will be fun to see what the students like!
what the kids are creating...
Kindergarten
The kindergarteners have finished their unit on the element of color by creating their own color wheel. We read the book Mouse Paint and talked about how the mice danced and mixed different primary colors to create secondary colors. They traced six mouse shapes, painted three with primary colors and painted three the secondary colors. They cut the mice out and arranged them in a color wheel circling a piece of cheese. They did a great job mixing colors and knowing how to create a secondary color.
1st Grade
The first graders are in the middle of their Louse Nevelson lesson. They learned about the artist Louise Nevelson and how she would create large and small assemblages of scrap wood and then paint them all one color, usually black, white or gold. They have created their own mini Nevelson assemblages by choosing a box lid as a base and then choosing from a large selection of wooden scraps to glue together. Some kids went with organized and simple while others went big with lots of pieces. Next class they will be painting all of it gold just like Nevelson.
2nd Grade
The second graders are in the middle of their Mary Blair inspired castles. They read the book Pocket Full of Color which was about Mary Blair's life and how she became the first female artist that worked with Walt Disney. If these castles look familiar that's good because she was the creator of the ride It's a Small World. They’ve started to lay down colorful squares of paper and glued down cut paper on top, next they will be adding more detail with oil pastels.
3rd Grade
The third graders have finished their fingerprint self portraits. They learned that a self portrait doesn’t have to be a realistic picture of your face, it just needs to be a representation of yourself. They learned about the science behind fingerprints and the different kinds. They got to take their own fingerprints with graphite and tape to see what kinds of prints they have. After taking their own fingerprints they chose the best one and drew an enlarged picture of it and filled it in with colorful designs and at least six things about themselves.
4th Grade
The fourth graders are sewing! They are making poptart plushies. They are learning the running stitch, the whip stitch, applique and how to tie knots. Depending on the group (because of snow days) some students are done while others are still working on them. They are coming out great and the kids love to sew!
5th Grade
The fifth graders have started the pantyhose and wire sculpture! This is a favorite project the kids look forward to in fifth grade. I got some scrap wood blocks, stapled wire to it and then the kids put pantyhose over it, formed the wire to a shape of their liking and then painted it with a homemade gesso of glue and acrylic paint. Now that the gesso has dried they will be painting them with all kinds of colors.
