I taught in two different schools: Hanoi University (pictured to the left) and Hanoi Star secondary school. Both assignments were fun. I gave weekly lectures on American history at the university. At the secondary school I conducted a World Heritage project with the students along with mini lessons about U.S. education.
I taught a short lesson about Stivers. The students loved the idea of an art school. They were also excited about having sports at our school. Below is a picture of a school assembly prior to the Tet holiday.
I attended a school field trip to the Hanoi Citadel (dates back to 11th century). Kids are kids. They loved the activity and the day out of school
The rice and meat are wrapped in leaves and the tied. You boil it for 4 hours and then it is served for Tet.
The university lectures vary. I teach on Tuesday and Thursday. My lecture topics included American political system and political parties, history of immigration and women's rights. The whole government shut down was an interesting topic and the students were quite interested in hearing how this happens in a democracy. The two students pictured above, volunteered to help me with my video project. The professor I am working with is in the picture top left. He normally introduces me to the class and then leaves.
I have loved my time at Hanoi Star. I have presented to teachers and parents about school in the U.S. I have made many connections and will be back. I introduced the school to National History Day and the students will be participating in the program in the fall. Hopefully I can return and help present some lessons.
Vietnam has no gifted program for their students nor do they have any special needs programs. Autism is not recognized as something the education system is responsbile for helping. There is a much needed support and American educators in Vietnam. This is a perfect place for a retired teacher who still wants to teach for a while longer.
Goals for the school are posted.
Tet cards from Stivers were shared with the school.
Aveages for the different grade/sections are posted for the entire school to see.
Lessons for the quarter are posted on the school bulletin board.
Hanoi Star works to incorporate so many skills into their students' lives. The school also invites the parents to be active in the learning. The younger grades had a "field day" during March. There were lots of games and competition.
This was a small private school in Hoi An. The owner/principal wanted her students to learn through project-based activities. We spent time discussing ideas. She hopes to bring her students to the United States in 2020.
