This website is desgined to be a one stop resource for all things Dayton Band. Below you will find information on expectations, grading, performance dates, etc.
I really only have one rule, Students will give their best effort at all times. What might that look like?
Having all necessary materials, including instrument, ready to go at the beginning of class
Not having other devices with in the area to minimize distractions.
Having a positive attitude and realizing that learning and developing a new skill is not something that can be done overnight. It takes consistent effort over time.
Do whats right, even when one doesn't feel like it. Develop a habit of persistence
"Train our mind to be stronger than our feelings" "the Best views come from the Hardest climbs"
When all else fails, just ask yourself, What Would Mr. Garrett Do?
5 Class room rules
1) Give Best Effort at all times
2) Be ready with all materials by 2 minutes after the Bell rings
3) When I am on the "podium", you are quiet
4) Let your acrtions speak louder than you words
5) What would Mr. Garrett do
Here are the Music Standards from the National Association of Music Educators
Through the natural process of music practice and rehearsals many , if not all, of these standards are addressed on a near daily basis. But what I have discovered over my 22 years as a professional musician and 15 years as a music educator is they can all be broken down into one underlying standard: EFFORT.
If a student gives the necessary effort on a daily basis, that effort will be rewarded with growth and improvement over time. The Grading blurb below is the standard blurb you will see in most, if not all classes in Dayton this year. For band specific, all assignments will be 10 points, to make the percentages work more seemlessly.
Grading
A student’s overall grade is based on their academic assessments (AC) and personal management (PM) in class.
These two categories are combined and an overall letter grade is assigned based on the following scale:
A: 90% - 100% B: 80% - 89% C: 70% - 79% D: 60% - 69% F: 0% - 59%
Gradebook entries will be worth different points based on the breadth and importance of the particular assignment/assessment. AC scores are given based on a student’s progress towards the standard(s). PM scores are generally given based on level of completion.
Home Access Center Symbols:
Blank = missing, but can still be turned in T = Turned in but not graded yet
EX = Excused, student does not need to do the assignment NA = Not Assessed at this timeSemester Grade will be the average of all grades in the grade book
see Grading Rubric Below for a more detailed description of what earning a specific grade looks like
There is a $50 rental fee for use of a school instrument. This will be added to the student's account as a fee.
For Pep Band: Students should wear a Dayton School Shirt (I have some extras in the band room, sizes are limited though)
For formal concerts and festivals, the Dayton Band wears all black;
Men: Black long sleeve colared button up shirt, Black slacks, black socks, and black shoes (A tie will be provided)Ladies: All Black dress, or All black dress slacks/skirt and black blouse. As part of my educational philosophy, I beleive that personal growth is an important part of reaching our maximum potential. One way we can do that is to impove the input we put into our lives. Motivational Monday is a way for students to start this process. I encourage students to listen to the youtube video every Monday, as a way of developing a personal growth plan
As a Music Educator, I have a B.M. from University of Oregon, and a Masters from PSU. I am also a professional French Horn player in the Willamette Valley area. I maintain a private french horn studio in Salem and have taught many exceptional horn players from middle school to college. Non music activities include spending time with my kids, dancing, exercise, golf and personal growth. I focus on building better routines and improving the input in my life. Books and audios by John Maxwell and Jordan Peterson are my main source of inspiration. I have two beautiful children Estelle (7) and Graysen (10).
