Tyler-Tallman Hall
5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Dr. Debra Lester
Take a light-hearted and enthusiastic look at space as we celebrate humanity’s curiosity and adventurous spirit that led us to explore beyond our planet. Hear highlights about NASA’s incredible journey—from the moon landing to Mars rovers—while sprinkling in fun, humorous facts that make space exploration relatable and entertaining.
Listeners will learn quirky tidbits such as: astronauts can grow up to two inches taller in space, space suits cost about $12 million each, and the International Space Station orbits Earth every 90 minutes—giving astronauts 16 sunrises a day. Laugh about how astronauts’ food has evolved from freeze-dried paste to pizza and tacos and how “space smell” has been described as seared steak mixed with metal.
With a balance of wonder and wit, we will marvel at NASA’s groundbreaking achievements—like the James Webb Telescope and plans for Mars—while poking gentle fun at space travel’s challenges (like floating pens and zero-gravity toilets).
Gain an inspiring reminder that space exploration isn’t just about rockets—it’s about imagination, teamwork, and daring to dream beyond the stars.
Tyler-Tallman Hall can be found on the campus of Davidson College on the top floor of the Sloan Music Center. The lecture hall can be reached by either stairs or elevator. A campus map, showing the Sloan Music Center, can be found here.
