We hear regularly that democracy is in danger, but how would we know if that’s true and, if so, how serious the threat is? One way to start is to think seriously about what basic principles (free expression, rule of law, equal rights, regular elections, etc.) matter most to democracy. This session introduces you to the work of Bright Line Watch, a research group led by Dartmouth professors that uses public opinion surveys to measure how the American public thinks about whether our democracy is declining or resilient. You’ll engage in some discussion about which principles are most important for democracy, and we’ll find out how democratic attitudes among the Class of 2029 compare with those of Americans more broadly.

Dartmouth provides countless opportunities to engage and grow alongside students, faculty, and staff. The values of Integrity, Responsibility, Respect, and Diversity are the ground on which our community is built. We’ll explore how we each cultivate our own belonging with a sense of adventure and commitment to intellectual and personal growth.
You'll participate in morning programs based on your House Community. Break rooms available at each program.
Program Descriptions
Introduction to Dartmouth's Sexual Violence Prevention Project: How can we create a Dartmouth where everyone feels safe, valued, and empowered? Explore the foundations of a supportive community, examine the roles we play in preventing power-based violence, and build the skills and knowledge to challenge harmful norms and foster a culture of care – together.
Response-Ability: Discover your role in shaping a mindful and vibrant Dartmouth. Through self reflection and collective action, explore ways to contribute to our community's well-being and build empowerment to create connections and positive change.
Engaging Dartmouth: Values. Policy. Community: Engaging thoughtfully and respectfully with others is key to creating a community built on mutual respect and understanding. Learn how to navigate disagreements, uphold our values when diverse perspectives arise, and utilize campus resources when these principles come into conflict.

You'll participate in programs based on your House Community.
