Customize Your List Use the checklist below as a baseline foundation. We strongly recommend customizing this list by speaking with a Study Away Mentor or previous participant who knows the specific cultural norms and climate of your host location.
Note: Most toiletries and basics can be purchased on-site. Save your luggage space for items you cannot live without.

Know Your Baggage Limits Airline policies vary significantly. Check your specific airline's website for weight limits and fees before you pack.
Pro Tip: If your program involves budget airlines for excursions, their strict limits (often 15-20 lbs) matter more than your international flight allowance.
Pack for Weather & Mobility Prepare for changing weather by packing layers rather than bulk.
The Carry Test You must be able to comfortably carry all your luggage by yourself up a flight of stairs.
Storage: Bedroom storage abroad is often limited; rigid suitcases may take up valuable living space.
Build a Capsule Wardrobe Choose versatile, mix-and-match clothing (neutral colors are great) to maximize outfits while minimizing items.
Laundry Reality: Dryers are rare abroad. Avoid heavy fabrics (like thick denim) that air-dry slowly.
Fabrics: Choose lightweight, wrinkle-resistant, and drip-dry fabrics.
The Carry-On Survival Kit Never check essential items. Pack a survival kit in your carry-on containing:
Medications: A full supply in original bottles (with a doctor's note).
Essentials: Toothbrush, change of underwear, and a clean shirt.
Logic: If your checked bag is lost for 48 hours, you should still be able to function comfortably.
