Master Gardner Grant for our New Vermicomposting Program

Feb. 1, 2019 - The Sustainability Club was awarded another $500 grant from The Master Garden Association of San Diego to start a Vermicomposting Program. We had a Master Gardener, Heidi Bentz, visit our club on Friday to teach the students the anatomy of a worm and help us start our first compost bin. The students had a blast and had so many questions for our visitor. Our worm bins will be fed with left over food scraps from our school cafeteria and ultimately create a rich substance that we will be able to add to our new garden this spring.

Environmental Buttons

Nov. 30, 2018 Thank you to the Darnall Parent Group for donating a button machine to the Sustainability Club. Students in the bottom left picture are some of the 17 students who were members of the club last year and earned their first year membership button.

The students in the top picture took on a Water ConservationChallenge and took short showers (8 minutes or less) for 20 days! They earned a “Help Save Water” button for their awesome efforts! The design of the button was designed by a club member and voted on by the club.

Students will have more opportunities to earn buttons with new challenges and events that happen during the year.

Congratulations to our young environmentalists!

New Club T-Shirts

Nov. 9, 2018 - Thank you to all the staff members and community members who donated money to make sure every student in the club this year received one of our brand new tye-dyed t-shirts. The students love wearing them on Fridays.

Tree Planting Event

Celebrating our 25th Year as a Charter School!

Our new tree is planted! On October 21, 2018, the Sustainability Club with the help of our Community Partner, Coastal Tree Care, planted an Australian Willow on Friday after school. Mrs. MacDonald’s Media Arts class had presented a slideshow on four different possible trees that we could plant. The whole school voted and the Australian Willow won! This tree planting is one of the ways we are celebrating our 25th year as Darnall Charter School!

New Recycle Bins

Sept. 14, 2108 - We got new recycle bins to promote recycling bottles that would normally be thrown away. The bottles will be collected and money raised will help fund our Darnall Girl Scouts' Trips. Thanks to our parent volunteer Ms. Luz Hernandez for collecting these bottles.
