Baseline Testing
All athletes MUST complete baseline assessment before first practice (or first contact practice). Testing is done through SWAY Medical. For more information (insert link to sway parent info sheet).
A baseline assessment will consist of seven parts: (1) concussion history and pertinent medical history (ADD/ADHD) (2) symptoms only (3) mBESS (4) Reaction Time (5) Inspection Time (6) Impulse Control and (7) memory. The baseline assessment will need to be completed annually. Sway has been shown to be strongly reliable in test-retest results.
Post-Concussion Follow-Up
The student athlete will complete a concussion symptom evaluation through SWAY Medical every day or as needed to monitor symptoms and recovery. According to the 6th International Conference on Concussion in Sport, the best available evidence shows that it is NOT beneficial to have strict rest but to allow relative rest. This includes activities of daily living and reduced screen time for up to the first 2 days after the injury. It is encouraged to start light intensity physical activity such as walking and stationary bike that does not more than mildly exacerbate symptoms in the first 24-48 hours. Physical activity and cognitive exertion should be STOPPED if concussion symptom exacerbation is more than mild and brief.Â
