Return to Play
Please remind your son/daughter to report to the athletic training room the next day that they are at school or practice for a follow-up evaluation and continued care.
Return-to-Learn (RTL)
Students must be removed from all physical activities including Physical Education, Strength & Conditioning, Choir and Band without penalty. Accommodations/learning adjustments for student-athletes must be provided as needed. Not all student-athletes will need a RTL strategy. RTL can begin following the initial period of relative rest (Step 1) and progress with an increase in cognitive load (Steps 2-4). Progression through RTL is symptom limited, no more than a mild and brief exacerbation of current symptoms related to the current concussion. RTL and RTS can progress at the same time. With this being said, RTL should be completed in full before unrestricted RTS. (insert link for RTL)
Return-to-Sport (RTS) - Functional Progression
Athletes will not be returned to play the same day of injury unless cleared by an ATC or Physician. Athletes will follow a stepwise return to sport protocol progression. In addition to this protocol, the Athletic Trainer will be using SWAY Medical to monitor symptoms as be able to compare balance, memory, reaction time, impulse control and inspection time compared to your child’s baseline that was performed before the season/beginning of the school year. This will assist the ATC/Physician in the return to play of your child. Student-athletes can engage in activities of daily living during the relative rest period of 24-48 hours. Step 1 can begin within 24 hours of injury and progress through each step with a minimum of 24 hours between steps. The sports medicine team should monitor steps 4-6.
