5th Grade Band
Danville students begin their time in band at the start of their 5th Grade year. The process to join in the amazing experience of being in band starts in the Spring of their 4th Grade year. Students will participate in Instrument Fittings and will select an instrument to play based on their enjoyment and the natural sound that they can make. The instruments available to start on in 5th Grade are Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, or Percussion.
5th and 6th Grade band students meet three times per week during the school day to focus on fundamental techniques on their instrument and will learn music to perform two concerts per year. These students enjoy learning at a pace that respects all skill levels and challenges them appropriately. For the 2025-2026 school year, there are 22 5th Graders and 18 6th Graders enrolled in band class.
Pellegrino Music Center out of Canton, OH provides exceptional repairs, instruments, and other equipment to all of the band programs in Knox County. Students can be enrolled in a rent-to-own plan to spread out the cost of a quality instrument to lower the barrier to entry to join band. This service is the preferred route to go to get started in band with an instrument that will remain in good condition and can last the student for years!
Danville Local Schools also has a limited number of school owned instruments that are available to students under specific circumstances for a small fee.
If you plan to acquire an instrument through a different means, be aware that it has become easy to find instruments of seemingly good quality that are actually not very good at all. An instrument of poor quality will make it difficult to progress for many reasons. They often break and are typically not repairable and the cheap quality will result in inconsistent playing at best. A few quality brands of instruments include:
Yamaha
Bach
Selmer
King
Buffet
Gemeinhardt
Jupiter
