Registration & Team FAQs

Q. Can I register for two sports in case I get cut from my first choice?

A. No, you must select one sport. If you change your mind prior to tryouts, stop by room 317 or email the Athletic Coordinator (Mr. Monette) and request the change. If you are cut from a team and wish to pursue participation with another team, you must contact the Athletic Coordinator. If space allows in the other program, you might be able to switch. Please understand that if try-outs are underway and/or completed in the other program, you may not be permitted to switch.

Q. I really want to be on one of the CDS teams this year, but I am worried about being cut. What should I do?

A. Great question!

  1. Go ask the coach of the team what they will be looking for at try-outs?

  2. Check the team information page to see if their are any minimum expectations for try-outs and work towards achieving and exceeding those expectations.

  3. Get in the gym during any free time you have (Phoenix time, Student CC) and practice on improving your skills.

  4. Join clubs outside of school time in the given sport you wish to participate on.

  5. Go play with your friends as often as you can after school or in school.

  6. Get in the fitness center to help improve your physical strength.

  7. Go for a run as often as you can. Running is one of the best activities for overall cardiovascular fitness and raising an athlete's VO2 max. This will be noticeable at try-outs when everyone else is slowing down because they are out of breath and you are able to keep on going.

  8. Participating in a variety of sports help you to become a better overall athlete, which will help you perform better in your primary sport of choice.

  9. Ask the coach if they happen to have an off-season workout plan they can share with you to get your ready for the upcoming season.

  10. Utilize the internet. It has an abundance of resources available at your finger tips. Google or Youtube drills to improve specific skills (ex. shooting in basketball).

Q. What happens if I quit or get removed from a team?

A. Any student quitting or being removed from a team (for academic or behavioural problems) may not be eligible to participate in the next team they tryout for regardless of the school year. This is to promote commitment to our programs. Eligibility in this case will be at the discretion of the athletic coordinator. Every situation is unique and students should speak the the athletic coordinator to find out more information.

Q. How many unexcused absences from practice or games am I allowed before being removed from a team?

A. Two unexcused absences from practices or games may result in the immediate dismissal from the team. *This will be at the coaches and athletic coordinators discretion*

  • Homework and assignments due the next day are not an excuse to miss practice. It is the students responsibility to manage their time well.

  • If you are sick/injured but still at school, then you are still expected to attend all practices

*If you are healthy enough to be in class, then you should be healthy enough to sit through a practice so that you aren't missing any potential important information*

A. Forensics team - Two unexcused absences from practices or One unexcused absence from a competition will result in the immediate dismissal from the team (forensics members only).

Q. What does my GPA have to be in order for me to participate on a team at CDS?

A. MS - All middle school players must maintain a school year GPA of 2.0 or higher to be eligible to play for the team. This will be checked every Friday to determine eligibility for games that weekend.

A. HS - All players must maintain a school year GPA of 2.5 or higher to be eligible to play for the team. This will be checked every Tuesday to determine eligibility for games that week.

Q. My vision is not great and I wear glasses, can I wear them when participating on CDS teams?

A. No! Glasses are not allowed to be worm during practices, games or even PE classes when you are a student at CDS (Exceptions for cross country & forensics team members). Students should wear corrective lenses, sports goggles or remove their glasses altogether. However, if you remove the glasses and have a hard time seeing, then you likely will not be able to perform at your very best and will hurt the team. So, get lenses or sports goggles!

Q. Am I allowed to wear earrings, necklaces, watches, etc. during practices or games?

A. No! All jewelry and other accessories must be removed. Coaches should not be allowing students to wear them during practices and KAIAC referees will 100% refuse to let you participate in the match. Earrings CAN NOT be taped over in the cases of fresh piercings. If the are not 100% removed, then you will not be able to participate.

Q. Do I have to buy a team uniform?

A. MS - No. All middle school students will be wearing their navy or gold PE uniform to all matches. Students on soccer, volleyball & basketball teams should always bring both colors to their games. *Exception - Only the MS Swim team will be purchasing their team uniform*

A. HS - The 3 major sports of varsity basketball (& JV boys), volleyball & soccer will not be purchasing team uniforms any longer as of 2019. The school has purchased team uniforms that students will "borrow" for the season. They will sign an agreement form with the Athletic Coordinator after inspecting the condition of the uniform and at the end of the season they will be returning the uniform washed and in similar condition and smell as they received it in. If any part of the uniform is lost or damaged, then parents, upon signing the Athlete Participation form, are agreeing to reimburse the school a total of 150,000 won to get replacements.

  • Currently at this time the varsity cross country, badminton, cheerleading, swim and forensics teams will be continuing to purchase their team uniforms.

Q. Why did the school start to purchase uniforms for some teams?

A. For the 3 major sports, in order to compete in KAIAC events, teams need to be wearing matching uniforms. In the past, once a student made a varsity team, the parents would have to purchase the team uniform and only new members of the team each year would buy the uniform that year.

However, when going form one school year to the next, if the uniform form from the distributor were to become discontinued, then the entire team would again have to purchase the new uniform in order for them to all be matching. This has caused some parents frustration as they just purchased a team uniform the year before in some cases.

We know that our athletes enjoyed having their own personal jersey number and name on the back of their uniforms and with the new change they no longer will be able to do that for the 3 major sports. However, teams can arrange to get warm-up hoodies or uniforms made with their own personalized names & numbers on them. *Designs & names on these warm-ups need to be approved by the Athletic Coordinator prior to being ordered*

Q. Once I am in high school and I play for ONE varsity team, am I eligible to purchase a varsity jacket?

A. No. To be eligible to purchase a varsity jacket you must have played for at least TWO CDS teams at the varsity level. This could be the same team over two years or two teams in one year. Jackets are only to be purchased at the end of the season, if the athlete is still on the team at the time.

Q. Do I have to fill out an Athlete Participation form for each sport I participate on?

A. No. Once you have filled it out once, then you are good for all other sports teams you play on for the entire year.

Q. Why do I have to pay an athletic fee & what is it used for?

A. Participation on an athletic team is a privilege and the school is a business. Athletic fees are to help cover the cost of buses and any other minor expenses that running a team may incur.

Q. Why are the athletic fees different for each sport & how are athletic fees calculated?

A. Athletic fees are primarily calculated on the average number of away games that each team usually attends. Some teams have more away games and some teams have fewer, so it is only right that the fees are different.

Q. When is the deadline to pay the athletic fee?

A. Athletic fees are due 1 week after the official team has been made or after orientation is complete (MS students). Those that miss the deadline may be removed from the team and another player may be added.

*If more time is needed, then you must contact Mr. Monette to arrange an alternative date for payment.*

Q. What is the school's bank account information to send in my child's athletic fee?

A. Pay To: Cheongna Dalton School Bank Name: Industrial Bank of Korea (IBK) Bank Account: 955-009331-04-024

Q. If I don't attend all the games or a game gets cancelled, do I get money back for these games?

A. No. In order for teams to function and have reliable transportation to away games/jamborees, teams are formed with the assumption that all athletes will be riding the bus. If you do not ride the bus to an event or home from an event afterwards, you will not be financially reimbursed by the school. If a game gets cancelled there will be no financial reimbursement as there are still booking cancellation fees for the school in these cases. However, under rare circumstances where multiple events get cancelled, then the school may give credit to those students affected and their athletic fee for the next team they make could be reduced. Also, in the event that additional jamboree or friendly matches get scheduled after the season has started, no additional fees will be charged to the student/parent for the extra buses.

*Additional transportation cost may be required in the event of special tournaments outside of the KAIAC events if the student choses to participate in these events*

Q. If I plan on going to, getting picked up or being dismissed from an away game by my parents/guardian or on my own, what should do?

A.

  1. If you will be going to game/jamboree on your own or with parents then:

    • you must let your coach know AND your parents must EMAIL them or the Athletic Coordinator, Mr. Monette, explaining this.

  2. If you take the CDS bus to the game/jamboree, but plan on being picked up by your parent/guardian or being dismissed from the hosting school (maybe because you live near it) then:

    • you must let your coach know AND your parents must EMAIL them or the Athletic Coordinator, Mr. Monette, explaining this.

*No student will be allowed to leave the hosting schools location on their own without this email by 9am the day of the game or without their parent being at the hosting school's location before the last game finishes for the day. The bus will leave the hosting school once all games have been completed and if the parent is not there to pick up their child at this time, then their child will be required to ride the bus back to CDS to be picked up at the school*
