Music studies at Sudie Williams TAG Academy will be an entertaining and enlightening adventure. Fourth-graders will explore music through staff notes, vocabulary and composition, singing, and exposure to diverse music styles with an emphasis on American and Texas heritage. This grade also will learn to play the recorder and will be a featured ensemble in concerts. Each student will have an account to Quaver Music, an exciting and fun online music education system which they can explore independently as well as with their class.
Fifth-graders taking Music will study the following units: American Popular Music, Composition, Classical Music, World Music, Folk & Country, and Blues & Jazz. The Composition unit features music literacy (staff notes, rhythms, melodies, symbols, terms) with the final objective a 16-measure original composition by each student. Classical Music highlights all styles of the genre: Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern including American composers. In addition, students will learn various songwriting styles including rap, folk and blues lyrics.
The course is designed to incorporate art, history, social studies, geography and language into music. I enjoy teaching this music course, which I designed, and strive to cultivate lifelong music lovers who grow to appreciate all styles past, present and future.
Extra activities for 5th grade includes a field trip to hear the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Students in both 4th & 5th grades will have the opportunity to see an opera via METLive at Booker T. Washington High School in the spring of 2022.

Both 4th- and 5th-graders will learn the 16 classical music pieces in the UIL Music Memory contest. Please check the Music Memory page on this website to view the entire list of classical and jazz pieces. By spring semester 2023, students who earn top scores in their class on a preliminary Music Memory listening test will be invited to be on the Sudie Music Memory Team and practice together in weekly after-school sessions in the Music Room. The Dallas ISD Music Memory contest had been held in the Meyerson Symphony Center with pieces performed by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Winning teams return with a huge trophy and Olympic medals.
Sudie Elementary Choir will be made up of all Music students. They will perform in school Choir concerts. Students will learn songs during weekly Music class. Songs will be posted on this website's Resources page so that students practice on their own, too.
