Music, in its many forms, styles, and genres can have a tremendous effect on people worldwide. However, looking at the statistics for the preferable style of music per age groups, music taste seems to change as a person gets older. As a common trend, a person's music tastes tend to become more conservative and mellow as they age (for example, hip-hop and rap are much more popular for younger age groups, as compared to the older generations). Another common trend is for the age of music to match the age of the listeners. A highly popular genre of music is classic rock, where the majority of listeners are the older generations, who were younger when those songs were originally released. However, it is also noted that younger to middle-aged individuals listen to significantly more music than older generations.

Consider this graph provided by statistica.com. This shows the most liked genres by age group (the higher the color on the bar, the older the participants). Here, classic rock is the most popular genre of music, but is most popular among 45+ aged participants and less popular among listeners under 45. Coming in second most popular for music genre is pop music . This is quite the opposite from the classic rock category; the majority of pop music listeners are under 35, but less popular among the participants above 35. This is a common theme: the newer the music, the younger the listeners, and vice versa.
Here is another graph that proves similar points, by musicbiz.org. Musicbiz goes on to explain, "Classic rock, country and classical all skewed older, with preference generally increasing with age. Pop, indie/alternative rock, hip-hop/rap and R’n’B, by contrast, had a younger bias, with preference peaking among those aged 16-24 before dropping off proportionately with age."

When I was looking into these different music trends, I began to wonder if the students here at Grants Pass would have similar results to these popular studies. My questions: What is the most popular genre of music at GPHS? Is there a most popular song or artist of this time preferred by students? Does the most-liked genres different between the age groups of the Scroll readers? If you feel so inclined, please help my study by completing the survey below! Thank you!
