Disney Plus, a new streaming service by Disney that includes content from Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, and National Geographic, was launched on November 12th, 2019. Cnet, an online presence dedicated to everything technology-related, showed that, within a month of Disney+ launching, 28.6 million people have signed up for the $7 a month commitment. Families all over the world are laughing, crying, and learning through this wonderfully nostalgic streaming service
Within a week of being released, The Mandalorian, released through Disney+, soared to the very top of the world charts and stayed there for 21 weeks, throwing out the Stranger Things record, according to Business Insider. Since the hit show has been released, Baby Yoda has become all the rage. Adorable Baby Yoda merchandise has flown off the shelves. Currently, the Funko Pop Baby Yoda Figurine is the number one toy on Amazon, according to Thinkum, an organization that writes articles based on statistics and math. Fans quickly fell in love with this big-eyed, fifty-year-old baby, and toy companies are using this to their best advantage. Stickers, stuffed animals, mugs, sweatshirts, socks, bobbleheads and figurines, tote bags, and pop sockets are just scratching the surface of this quirky green creature’s merchandise. Fans are head over heels for Baby Yoda and this show and the second season coming out in October of 2020 is highly anticipated.
Among The Mandalorian, other popular shows and movies include High School Musical: The Series, Star Wars, The World According to Jeff Goldblum, and Encore. With so many subscribers and watchers, Disney is constantly trying to put out new content to keep their loyal customers entertained. New Star Wars series, classic films such as Cinderella, sequels like Incredibles 2 and brand new movies are slowly appearing on this streaming service. Disney is producing more and more live-action films based on original cartoons that fans are hooked on. Their newest film, Mulan, has created an issue with fans. Disney has decided to make this version of Mulan historically accurate and many ideas and characters were cut. Mulan will not be pretending to be a man and will fight in the war as herself. As General Li Shang is not a character in the movie, Mulan will have no love interest. In addition, the beloved character Mushi and Mulan’s cricket Cri-Kee will not be making any appearances. Disney is making huge leaps by making this film historically accurate no matter the cost.
With over 7,500 episodes and 500 movies, Disney Plus truly has something for everyone. Data given by IGN, a company reporting on all things entertainment, shows that over 1.3 million hours of entertainment was streamed on Disney’s release date. Classic Gen Z shows like That’s So Raven, or Wizards of Waverly Place, or, every high schoolers’ favorite cartoon, Kim Possible, are becoming more and more popular as people take a nostalgia trip.
