Servicing our community

Humans are distinctly social beings, who thrive on relationships with others and show love and affection to even those who are strangers. Many have found joy in serving, a sentiment that is spreading like wildfire across the world. Anyone anywhere can be involved in so many ways. There are no limits to community service and there is no reason not to participate. Although more difficult in these trying times, there are still so many ways to reach out.
Teenage girls all over the world have made quite the trend of cutting their own hair with simple kitchen scissors. Thousands of inches have been cut off and simply thrown away when something much better could have been done with it. Many non-profit organizations, such as Locks Of Love and Wigs for Kids, accept hair donations to be made into wigs for kids who have lost hair due to medical reasons. None of the kids have to pay for their wigs that bring back confidence and a sense of normalcy to their hectic and scary lives. Hair donation charities have made it extremely easy for people to donate. A ten-inch minimum of hair is required to donate and dreadlocks cannot be donated. Once the hair is cut, the detached ponytail will be placed into a plastic bag and then an envelope and shipped to headquarters. Those who decide to donate may have to fill out one or two forms, but nothing too difficult. Hair is such an easy sacrifice to make a child’s life feel somewhat normal.
There are so many charities and organizations that need any and every form of help. Some are hands-on, such as Habitat for Humanity, The Humane Society, and The YMCA. Some accept money donations, where people may, for example, buy a cow for a family in need. However people would like to serve and volunteer, there is an opportunity. It can be hard for individuals to decide where to put their precious time, energy, and money, but not impossible. A simple search for charities causes thousands of results to pop up. One company has decided to take the search one step farther. VolunteerMatch.org is a nonprofit that allows its users to choose which kind of volunteering they would like to participate in while staying in their local areas. Thousands upon thousands of people have been able to use this wonderful tool to help their community.
While the entire world is in dire need of help, our school and community need help, too. There are so many opportunities to serve around the school that most students do not even recognize. The Key Club at Grants Pass High School constantly has new ways to serve. Danika Chandler, a sophomore involved in the Key Club at Grants Pass High School, says, “...being in Key Club, I’ve learned that, even if it’s not much-- even if it is just weeding, it is still taking time out of your day to help someone and it makes a difference in their lives. No matter how big or small it is, it is still helping others.” Chandler goes on to list a few of the service opportunities Key Club provides. These include going to the Josephine County food bank to weed and pick vegetables, organizing parking at the fairgrounds, Wildlife Images clean-up, and helping at Parkside’s Jog-a-thon. Opportunities are out there for everyone.
There is always an opportunity to serve those in need-- not only loved ones, but strangers, as well. As Aesop said, “You will never regret being kind."
