Many events all over the world have been cancelled as a result of the spreading COVID-19 virus and, unfortunately, Grants Pass events have been no exception. But there is one event in our city that has been cancelled that stands out due to the fact that it has happened for 60 years. With the heaviest hearts, the Grants Pass Active Club has announced that Boatnik 2020 has been cancelled. This is something that is not only sorrowful by itself, but could also cause more negative results in our city.
The Grants Pass Active Club is a non-profit organization that supports the local children and youth activities of Southern Oregon with their earnings from purely volunteer-based activities. They fund activities held by local schools-- which includes the Grants Pass High School Marching Band, to which they donated $16,000 to help them get to the Thanksgiving Macy’s Parade. The Grants Pass Active Club has held Boatnik on Memorial Day weekend in Grants Pass near the Rogue River since 1959 and, every year, it has been a great opportunity for families to get together and have fun. Boatnik consists of boat races, parades, many rides, game booths, various food concession stands, and much more.
The Grants Pass Active Club said that it was not an easy decision, but to help stop the spread of the Coronavirus, they decided to cancel Boatnik this year. Besides the fact that families have been deprived of a great event, the youth of Grants Pass could be forced to limit activities next year as a result of receiving no donations from the earnings of Boatnik. It is unclear if Boatnik has some donation money in reserve for such an occasion but, if not, the youth of Grants Pass may need to hold more charity events when quarantine ends in order to raise money for their activities. The cancelling of Boatnik may also affect the city's morale as it is known that many people, even out of state, look forward to Boatnik every year.
While it is certain that Boatnik is cancelled this year, it obviously does not mean that Boatnik will be cancelled in the years to come. Our city can only hope that, when Boatnik does eventually re-open, it brings in an average or above-average amount of money so that the youth programs can continue to be funded. It is more than likely that the Grants Pass Active Club made the right choice in cancelling this year's Boatnik. Maybe, with the extra time, they can prepare another event when quarantine ends or they can try to improve upon the next Boatnik.
The quarantine won’t last forever, GP. Stay strong and optimistic.
