Consisting of roughly thirty students. It's a class some know very well. On the days when classes are a lot shorter, the class will consist of laughs, on longer and more regular days, the class consists of long rehearsals and constant preparation for upcoming concerts, and this is all because of Mr. Hurshman, the band director here at FMS.
Mr. Hurshman is a fantastic teacher, as you may know. There is never a day that goes by in Mr. Harshman's class that we don't have a great time! From telling hilarious stories to conducting his ensemble, Mr. Hurshman can keep crazy classes in order.
On Feb. 11th, I was able to have an interview with Mr. Hurshman. He started as a saxophone player as a kid and has grown to know his way around quite a few instruments, now able to play a wide variety of brass and woodwind instruments. “What instrument is one you would suggest to someone starting?” I asked, “Well that depends.” a pause, “The shape of the lips, jaw and teeth really determine it. If it takes a lot of work to make a sound, your probably not going to want to play the instrument.” and, “Plus, if they have an instrument already, I'll probably have them play that instrument.” Which makes total sense!
When asking Mr. Hurshman what section could use more instrumentalists, he replied with a confident answer, “Clarinets.” He gave no thought to it. The clarinets are a beautiful sounding instruments that are in desperate need of some new players. While the band used to have a large population of clarinet players, they have been dropping like flies. The population went from roughly 15 to around 7 players. The answer to this issue is not necessarily known. Some players move on to other opportunities, and some simply swap to another instrument.
When asked about what Mr. Hurshman likes about teaching band, it really comes down to watching the kids grow. When the 6th graders start understanding the music, when it clicks, that’s an amazing moment, and when the 8th graders and 7th graders play and the music with better articulation, sound clarity, and balance better than before, those are the parts that make teaching band great.
Overall, FMS band is the place to be, and Mr. Hurshman makes it even better.
