Core Classes that all students are scheduled for include: Language Arts, Science, American History, and Math. There are options for an Advanced Math Class (Algebra) and a Honors Language Arts Class.
Electives in 8th grade are one semester, with the exception of Band and Choir, which are year long. Students are able to select the following classes for their electives: Band, Choir, Guitar, Theater, Advanced Art, Art 8, GTT - Robotics, Forensics, FACS (Family and Consumer Sciences), Spanish, Weight Training, PE, and Partners in PE.
A SOAR elective is an option for students that are identified as Gifted and Talented.
Art: Art 8 is designed to help improve students’ basic art skills; drawing, painting and sculpting, design artwork using a variety of media and techniques, develop students’ creativity and self-expression, and recognize and use the art elements (line, shape, color, value, form, texture and space), and design principles (rhythm, balance, proportion, variety, emphasis, harmony and unity
Choir: (Honor Choir)This class is designed to extend and enhance student knowledge in music theory and complex rhythm patterns. The class will introduce students to music theory and complex rhythm patterns as well as composition and songwriting, extensive sight-signing and ear training. Students will build a repertoire of 3 and 4 part harmonies in a cappella songs, madrigals, classical and songs in foreign languages. Students will be required to perform in all school concerts and CHSAA Large Ensemble competitions.
Show Choir: It is an ensemble that focuses on preparing and performing a choreographed show. This group is perfect for students who love being on stage and will help them build skills for musical theater and future show choirs.
Guitar: Beginning level guitar class for ACOUSTIC guitar only.
FACS (Family and Consumer Sciences): Students will learn a variety of hand and machine stitches, resulting in a final project. Students will also learn about kitchen safety, nutrition, and cooking skills.
GTT-Robotics: Students trace the history, development, and influence of automation and robotics. They learn about mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation, and computer control systems. Students acquire knowledge and skills in problem-solving, teamwork collaboration, and innovation.
Forensics: Students play the role of real-life medical detectives as they analyze genetic testing results to diagnose disease and study DNA evidence found at a “crime scene.” They solve medical mysteries through hands-on projects and labs, investigate how to measure and interpret vital signs, and learn how the systems of the human body work together to maintain health.
PE: Team sports and fitness is the focus for eighth grade physical education classes. Students will use game rules as well as incorporate game strategies into team activities that are developmentally appropriate. Core activities include volleyball, basketball, softball, archery, as well as fitness activities such as running (fartlek training, long-distance running, calisthenics), fitness stations (running and weightlifting). Assessments include written tests as well as skills tests. Student participation is highly recommended.
Advanced Spanish: This is an advanced semester course. Students will continue to develop the students' basic vocabulary. Students at this level learn greetings and basic phrases, leisure activities, numbers from 0-100, school supplies and course names, expressing time and dates, conjugation of basic regular and irregular verbs, and agreements of descriptors. Pre-requisit: students must have earned an A or B in 7th grade Spanish.

Advanced Theater Arts: This course is an acting and performance-focused class that is recommended for students who hope to continue theater when they are in high school. Students in Advanced Theater will engage abilities in auditioning, creating in-depth characterization, and collaborate with a team to participate in rehearsal and creative processes to effectively perform in a selected scripted work. Doing so will expand each student’s acting skills necessary for growth and excellence in a theatrical environment from page to performance.
Theater Arts: Students will be introduced to the many aspects of performance and given the opportunity to try a variety of theatrical skills. During the semester, students will produce theatrical work in small groups as well as create individual products. The goal of this class is to help facilitate good peer dynamics and build self-confidence.
Weight Training: This course is set up to focus on the development of physical performance. Students will enhance their knowledge and physical skills to improve on functional strength, power, linear/lateral speed, agility, and quickness. With a strong emphasis on work ethic, safety, balance and cooperation, students will use free weights, Olympic lifts, plyometrics, agility drills and stabilization training to produce positive outcomes in dynamic physical tests.
Band is a year long class. This is an advanced band class for students who already have an understanding of basic music reading, instrument assembly and maintenance, correct playing position and sound tone production. Instruction offers continued focus on the refinement of tone quality, technique, aural skills and music literacy.
Broadcasting
This class will focus on the weekly production of a televised news broadcast. Students will be asked to create group projects that demonstrate the ability to tell a story or provide information using video. Topics include on-camera skills, PSA, advertising, and commercial concepts, composing advanced camera shots, and advanced video editing. An application must be completed.
Partners in Physical Education
Partners in PE is an advanced PE class designed for students with a firm grasp on basic sports skills who are interested in developing leadership skills, have compassion for and/or perusing a career working with individuals with disabilities. Partners in PE focuses on the physical, intellectual and social growth of all participants. Students are provided with the opportunity for hands-on experience in the teaching process working with individuals who have diverse abilities. They develop knowledge and skills about physical activities that promote wellness, sports training, and community recreation. Engaging in physical activity and sport alongside peers with and without disabilities fosters important social relationships within the school culture and also in the community.
