Electives in 7th grade are one semester, with the exception of Band and Choir, which are year long. Students are able to select the following classes for their electives: Band, Broadcasting, Choir, 2D Art, 3D Art, Computer Sciences, FACS (Family and Consumer Sciences), Magic of Electrons, Pre-Engineering, Spanish, Technology Education, Theater Arts, and Women's Choir.
A SOAR elective is an option for students that are identified as Gifted and Talented.
Art: Students will explore different materials, techniques, and processes to create a variety of 2-dimensional artwork. The course will begin by developing foundational drawing skills that will transfer into the exploration of different types of painting, collage, mixed media, and digital technology. Student will examine the work of contemporary artists who use 2D art materials as a form of expression. Students will engage in the practice of art journaling, exploring themes, and developing their own style.
Choir: (Honor Choir)This class is designed to extend and enhance student knowledge in music theory and complex rhythm patterns. The class will introduce students to music theory and complex rhythm patterns as well as composition and songwriting, extensive sight-signing and ear training. Students will build a repertoire of 3 and 4 part harmonies in a cappella songs, madrigals, classical and songs in foreign languages. Students will be required to perform in all school concerts and CHSAA Large Ensemble competitions.
Women's Choir: This class is designed to extend and enhance student knowledge in music theory and complex rhythm patterns.
Computer Science: The course takes a wide lens on computer science by covering topics such as problem solving, programming, physical computing, user-centered design, and data, while inspiring students as they build their own websites, apps, games, and physical computing devices.
FACS (Family and Consumer Sciences): Students will learn a variety of hand and machine stitches, resulting in a final project. Students will also learn about kitchen safety, nutrition, and cooking skills.
Health: Health is a part of the PE classes. Students will get a thorough, comprehensive coverage of substance use and abuse (including tobacco, alcohol, and drugs), mental and emotional health, stress management, social health, nutrition and physical fitness. Health is a required course for 7th graders.
Coding I: This course provides an introduction to coding in Python. Students master basic coding concepts common to all programming languages, such as statements, conditionals, and loops, and are additionally introduced to: libraries, procedural graphics, and complex input. Students develop coding-related skills such as decomposition of large programs, debugging, and analyzing code written by others. Students will be able to create games, animations, and other interactive programs in Python upon completion of the course.
Magic of Electrons: In this unit, students examine the behavior and parts of atoms as well as the impact of electricity on the world around them. They learn skills in basic circuitry design and use what they know to propose designs such as a burglar alarm for an art museum
PE: Team sports and fitness is the focus for seventh grade physical education classes. Students will use game rules as well as incorporate game strategies into team activities that are developmentally appropriate. Core activities include volleyball, basketball, softball, archery, as well as fitness activities such as running (fartlek training, long-distance running, calisthenics), fitness stations (running and weightlifting). Assessments include written tests as well as skills tests. Student participation is highly recommended. PE is a required course for 7th graders.
Pre-Engineering: this unit traces how science has affected technology throughout history. Students learn about the mechanics of motion, the conversion of energy, and the use of science to improve their communication all through challenging Engineering Projects.
Spanish: Students at this level learn greetings and basic phrases, leisure activities, numbers from 0-100, school supplies and course names, expressing time and dates, conjugation of basic regular and irregular verbs, and agreements of descriptors.
Technology Education: This unit uses solid modeling (a very sophisticated mathematical technique for representing solid objects) to introduce students to the design process. Utilizing this design approach, students understand how solid modeling has influenced their lives. Students also learn sketching techniques and use descriptive geometry as a component of design, measurement, and computer modeling. Using design briefs or abstracts, students create models and documentation to solve.
BAND: This is an intermediate band class for students who already have an understanding of basic music reading, instrument assembly and maintenance, correct playing position and sound tone production. Instruction offers continued focus on the refinement of tone quality, technique, aural skills and music literacy.
Broadcasting
This class is an introduction to creating and producing news through video. Students will learn the basics of storytelling and news production. Topics include an introduction to the technology needed for video production, on-camera skills, composing camera shots, and basic video and music editing. Students must fill out an application.
Theater Arts: Students will be introduced to the many aspects of performance and given the opportunity to try a variety of theatrical skills. During the semester, students will produce theatrical work in small groups as well as create individual products. The goal of this class is to help facilitate good peer dynamics and build self-confidence.
Tech Theater: Introduction to technical theater for students who have an interest in theater: on or off stage. Students will begin this course by interacting with all elements of technical theater such as lighting, sound, construction, scenic painting, and others. Once students have an understanding of each element, the Tech Theatre class will collaborate to design, construct, and create the technical elements for the mainstage play/musical, and other projects. During this hands-on unit of the course, students will experience, observe, and reflect upon what interests them about the creative technical process. This reflection will lead students to selecting one element of technical theater (lighting, sound, etc.), and engage with an individualized-style learning process to interact with their chosen domain on a deeper level, and focused perspective.
Skyview has a wide variety of intervention courses to support students.
Success Strategies: Course to support students on an IEP.
CLDE: Course to support our English Language Learners
SOAR: Course available to our higher achieving students.
