Core Classes that all students are scheduled for include: Language Arts, Science, Western Hemisphere, and Math.
Middle School is a period where students have the opportunity to explore new classes. Every nine weeks, 6th graders will rotate through a different elective. The classes include:
Art: Art is designed to help improve students’ basic art skills; drawing, painting and sculpting, design artwork using a variety of media and techniques, develop students’ creativity and self-expression, and recognize and use the art elements (line, shape, color, value, form, texture and space), and design principles (rhythm, balance, proportion, variety, emphasis, harmony and unity).
Choir: All classes will learn basic music theory, a repertoire in 2 and 3 part harmonies that includes classical, pop, and multicultural songs. Students will be required to participate in school concerts during the school year.
FACS (Family and Consumer Sciences): Students will learn a variety of hand and machine stitches, resulting in a final project. Students will also learn about kitchen safety, nutrition, and cooking skills.
Intro to Coding: This course provides an introduction to coding in Python. CS100 covers basic coding concepts common to all programming languages such as statements, conditionals, and loops. The course also focuses on developing coding-related skills such as decomposition of large programs, debugging, and analyzing code written by others. Students completing this course will be able to create text-based games and other interactive programs in Python.
PE: Class focuses on physical fitness, skill development, game rules, and basic game strategies for the sports taught. Games appropriate for grade level are introduced. Fitness activities include running, stations, aerobics, and lifting of weights. Core activities for the course are volleyball, basketball, softball and archery. Student participation is essential. Assessments include knowledge of sport or activity to include vocabulary, rules and an active level of participation.
Spanish: Students at this level learn greetings and basic phrases, leisure activities, numbers from 0-100, school supplies and course names, expressing time and dates, conjugation of basic regular and irregular verbs, and agreements of descriptors.
Technology Education: Tech Ed students will create a Google account and learn how to create Google Docs, Google Drawings, Google Sites, and use other Google applications. Students will learn about the Design Process used by engineers and think tanks in the world. Students will be introduced to CAD (computer-aided drafting program) to create three-dimensional objects.
Theater Arts: Students will be introduced to the many aspects of performance and given the opportunity to try a variety of theatrical skills. During the semester, students will produce theatrical work in small groups as well as create individual products. The goal of this class is to help facilitate good peer dynamics and build self-confidence.
Band is a year long class and a fun and exciting option for students to take. Please reach out to Mrs. Williams (jwilliams@d49.org) if your student is interested in Band.
Broadcasting
3rd and 4th Quarters
This class is an introduction to creating and producing videos. Students will learn the basics of video production. Topics include an introduction to the technology needed for video production, on-camera skills, composing camera shots, and basic video. Students will need to complete an application to be selected into Broadcasting.
