Scholarship Application Tips
- When applying for scholarships, you should allot 50 to 60 hours towards researching available scholarships and completing required application materials.
- Pay attention to application requirements and deadlines.
- Have a teacher or counselor look over your essay or personal statement.
- Send a thank you cover with your application materials.
- Place all materials in a binder or cover so they look neat and professional.
Avoid Scholarship Scams!
Do not invest more than a postage stamp to get information about scholarships.
Never give anyone your financial information (credit card numbers or bank account numbers).
Nobody can guarantee that you will “win” a scholarship or guarantee “high success rates”.
Very little scholarship money goes “unclaimed” and everyone has access to the same information.
You cannot be selected by a National Foundation or be a “finalist” for a scholarship that you did not apply for.
Scholarship scams frequently make the following claims or have the following characteristics:
- Everyone is eligible.
- We apply on your behalf or we do all of the work.
- No telephone number or use of a mail drop box for a return address.
- Masquerading as a federal agency.
- Claims of university, government, Chamber of Commerce, or Better Business Bureau approval.
- Official seals or fancy letterhead.
- Notification by phone.
- A Florida or California address.
