COMPASS ACADEMY
Compass Academy is an academic program open to any District 303 student entering grades 9-12. The program has a focus on creativity and innovation, personalized learning, and preparation for multiple paths to post-secondary success.
The program, which is housed at the Haines Center, offers many components that are unique among District high school programs. Specifically, Compass Academy offers a small learning community of approximately 125 students and a flexible schedule with a later start than the comprehensive high schools. Students will also have the opportunity to take courses through an online or blended format, at the Fox Valley Career Center or Elgin Community College.
The instructional model focuses on a personalized approach, project-based learning, and interdisciplinary seminars. Additionally, students will gain employability skills that are embedded and will experience opportunities for extended learning outside the classroom. Unlike traditional high school learning, students will demonstrate proficiency of learning through acquisition of standards-based competencies instead of receiving credits and letter grades.
Various courses that may not be available at the Compass Academy may be taken at the comprehensive high school, such as the performing arts and driver education.
Compass Academy students may also participate in extracurricular activities, including athletics, at their comprehensive high school.
Students interested in learning more about the program or the application process should contact the Director, Mrs. Sharon Stanley, at sharon.stanley@d303.org or they may speak with their school counselor.
