6th Grade will be exploring Ancient Greece by discussing the different lifestyles of Sparta and Athens. We will also be starting our Ancient Rome Unit. Government types like a Democracy and a Republic will be discussed during this Unit. They will also be making connections from these Ancient civilizations to the United States.
In Social Studies, Your student is currently studying the unit “America Before and After Colonization” in Social Studies. In this chapter, students will explore the political, economic, geographic, and social (PEGS) factors that shaped the colonies, including self-government, religion, and the relationship between Europe and the New World. Vocabulary is a major focus, with quizzes based on applying words in context.
You can support your child by discussing the Mayflower Compact and how geography influenced colonial development. Encourage them to use TCI (our online textbook) or independent research to answer their questions and deepen understanding.
At the start of our school year we have been going through our "Tensions in the West" Lesson. In this Lesson we are exploring the different groups of people who moved to the West such as Railroad Builders, Ranchers & Cowboys, Miners, Homesteaders, etc. A theme of this unit is looking at the effect that our moving into the West had on the American Indians, leading to their forced move to reservations. Our next Lesson "Rise of Industry" we will be learning about the Industrial Revolution & the rise of big business.
