Miscellaneous Student Information

Names of Complaint Managers and Grievance Coordinator [See Adm. Procedure 2:260-E1]

Residency [See Board Policy 7:60]

Only students who are residents of the District may attend a District school without a tuition charge, except as otherwise provided below or in State law. A student's residence is the same as the person who has legal custody of the student, as defined by State law. The administration may require proof of residence and legal custody. If you are planning to move during the four years, you should first consult with the school’s Registrar. She can tell you whether the new location is inside the school’s attendance areas. Do not assume that once you start school you will be able to continue here until you graduate. State law and Board Policy require you to live in the district in order to have a free education.

Open Campus

Open campus permits students to leave the building during their lunch period. This is an earned privilege open only to juniors and seniors. The following conditions will result in the Open Campus privilege being revoked:

  • Students who receive an "F" for any nine week marking period will lose their open campus privilege for the following marking period.

  • Students who receive a "WF" for any nine week marking period will lose their open campus privilege for up to a semester.

  • Students who have two or more truancies to class, homeroom, or study hall will lose their open campus privilege for up to a semester.

  • Students who misbehave and receive penalties "C" or "D" in the Student Handbook will lose their open campus privilege for up to a semester.

Parents whose students are eligible to have open campus must come to school and sign the permission form in the Attendance Office. Students will then have their I.D. card marked "O.C.” Students who are not eligible for the open campus privilege must remain in the school building after arriving for their first class.

All parking areas are off limits for students without open campus privileges. Students with open campus must be prepared to show their I.D. cards with the “O.C.” marked to any staff member who asks to see them at any time in or out of the building.

Meetings (Outside the Published School Day)

A staff supervisor must be present whenever students use the school building at the close of the school day. Student activity groups meet only under the direction of a faculty sponsor.

Fundraising

Students who participate in authorized fundraisers for their Niles Township clubs or activities must adhere to the following regulations:

Fundraisers for outside-of-school organizations or activities are NOT permitted.

Fundraisers MUST be approved by the school’s club or activity sponsor and then approved by the Director of Student Activities.

No one may sell any fundraising item in a classroom while a class is in session.

Students who violate the above regulations may:

Lose fundraising privileges for that event.

Lose fundraising privileges for the remainder of the semester or school year.

Possibly penalize his/her entire club or activity from additional fundraising for the remainder of the semester or school year.

Be referred to the Dean for insubordination.

Field Trips [See Board Policy 6:240]

Student Trips: Liability Understanding: The following statements govern all student trips, including field trips and trips associated with student activities. They provide more detail than is included in the Parent Permission Form (see Adm. Procedure 6:190-E1).

Trips are offered to students as an opportunity and are not a requirement. Students will not be penalized for non-participation, although non-participants may be given an alternate assignment.

Niles Township High School District 219 school personnel will supervise all trips. However, they cannot always control the conditions and environment present during the trip, and therefore cannot prevent all injuries that may occur on the trip.

There are always risks associated with any trip that cannot be fully known or controlled.

Parent permission is an acknowledgement that the student is sufficiently fit (physically, mentally, and emotionally) to be able to participate.

Parent permission includes permission for the chaperones and supervisors of the trip to authorize emergency medical treatment for the student, if necessary.

All rules in the Student Handbook, as well as others outlined on any information sheets specific to a given trip, apply to the student during the trip. Failure to abide by any of them may result in a student being sent home and may affect eligibility to participate in other trips sponsored by District 219 in the future.

Should it be necessary for a student to be returned home for any reason (including conduct or illness), parents are fully responsible for transportation and other arrangements, including all expenses in connection with such a return.

Parents agree that District 219 and anyone associated with it will not be liable for any loss, injury or death related to the student’s participation in the trip, except that caused by a District 219 employee as a result of his/her willful and wanton conduct or intentional act.

Parents also agree that District 219 and anyone associated with it will not be liable for any loss, injury, or death that occurs as a result of another student’s action or failure to act, or those of a non-participant’s actions or failure to act related to the student’s participation in the trip.

These rules and liability exclusions apply to all trips and the parent’s signature on the permission form indicates that they have read and accepted them.

National Honor Society

Niles Township High Schools have a National Honor Society chapter that seeks to recognize leaders in the school in the areas of scholarship, character, service, and overall leadership. It also functions as a school organization in order to provide services to Niles Township High Schools.

Each spring, a special faculty committee, appointed by the Principal, selects members of the junior class for membership in the National Honor Society. In the selection process, recommendations of the entire faculty are solicited. In the fall semester, certain seniors who have met the criteria may be selected. To be selected for membership is a privilege.

To be eligible for this honor, a student must meet the following criteria:

  • Scholarship: In order to be eligible for membership in the Society, juniors and seniors must have a grade point average that will be determined each semester.

  • Service: Must participate actively in school activities during the first five semesters of high school

  • Leadership: Must receive faculty leadership recommendations. Leadership is defined as:

  • Being resourceful in proposing new problems, applying principles, and making suggestions.

  • Promoting school activities.

  • Contributing ideas that improve the civic life of the school.

  • Demonstrating academic initiative.

  • Proving to be dependable in any responsibility accepted.

  • Inspiring positive behavior in others.

  • Character: Must receive faculty character recommendations, including the homeroom teacher and guidance counselor. Character is defined as:

  • Integrity – no incidents of cheating or academic dishonesty.

  • Positive Behavior – follows the rules and regulations regarding attendance and discipline as described in the Student Handbook.

  • Ethics – wants to do the “right” thing in most situations. Stresses courtesy, concern, cooperation, and respect for others.

  • Personality – exemplifies desirable qualities of personality such as cheerfulness, friendliness, and stability.

Any student failing to maintain the standards under which he or she was accepted will be dismissed from membership in the Society per the guidelines set forth by the National Association.

Textbooks [See Adm. Procedure 6:210-A3]

Textbooks are rented to students and are issued by the Textbook Center personnel. Students are required to pick up and return their own textbooks. Additional information will also be provided at textbook distribution time. A fine will be assessed for each book left in the locker. Books which are defaced, or if proper return procedures are not followed, will be assessed a fine. Any book with a bar code MUST be returned. Some books appear to be workbooks but are considered a text and must be returned.

Students are to check their textbooks very carefully for damage of any kind (pen/pencil/highlighting marks, torn pages or binding, etc.). If any book is damaged, it is to be returned to the Bookstore. The student will receive either another book or a notation will be made on the textbook card indicating the damage to the book so the student won’t be charged for this damage when the book is returned. Students will have until the end of the second week of school to do this. After that time, they will be held responsible for the condition of their books. (Transfer students must report problems within one week of registration.)

Taking a little time to properly complete the procedure on distribution and collection days may save you a great deal of time later.

All textbooks and novels must be returned to the bookstore within ten (10) business days after the end of the school year. No refunds will be made for any textbooks or novels returned after the ten (10) days. Refund checks for under $10.00 will not be issued.

Visitors – Student

District 219 does not allow students from outside the district to shadow current students during the school day. Unauthorized presence in the building or on school grounds may be considered trespassing under the Criminal Code of Illinois. Violators are subject to arrest and prosecution. Appointments to visit the Niles Township High Schools may be arranged through the Assistant Principal’s Office.

Budget Publication Notice

The District posts the final budget on its website after it is approved by the Board of Education. This approval must occur by September 30. The District’s web address is www.niles219.org.
