College Applications:
Where to Start & Important General Info
Types of College Applications
There are three main types of college applications:
School-specific Applications (the college’s own application, such as Harper College)
System Applications (University of Wisconsin system, University of California system, Florida SUS, etc. - includes all campuses in one app)
Application Platforms: (The Common Application, The Coalition Application/Scoir - one application accepted by many partner colleges)
Some colleges accept more than one type of application and allow the student to choose. (TIP: Don't do extra work! If you can use one application platform and use it for multiple schools, do that!)
How to Find a College's Application & Get Started!
Go to the college’s website and find their Admissions information webpage
Each college's website will list the type of application(s) they accept
Look at the Application Fast Facts menu for commonly needed information about your high school
The Getting Organized and Ready to Apply section has worksheets to keep track of applications and logins
Admission Plans
For any student that wishes to apply Early Decision (which is a binding decision), students must have a meeting with Mr. Chiakulas and have parents confirm their understanding and agreement to applying ED before a counselor will sign off on the application.
Parents are highly encouraged to complete the college's Net Price Calculator (NPC) and print out a copy of it for their records.
Please make sure to give Mr. C and your counselor plenty of advanced notice to make this happen.
College Specific Information
Scoir Application for Coalition Colleges
The Coalition Application is a universal application used at over 150 member colleges. Starting in 2022-23 it will be absorbed with Scoir and no longer be a stand-alone application.
***** PLEASE NOTE: There are NO colleges that ONLY accept the Coalition/Scoir app! If possible, please consider using the Common App or the college's own application instead. See Mr. Chiakulas with questions.
